7. The Alzheimer's was his own fault.
"Ironically, as President, Mr. Reagan consigned funds for long-term care of the frail elderly to the bottom of his priorities list, and funds for Alzheimer's research were kept so small as to be ineffectual. Yet taxpayers will pay for most, if not all, the costs of Mr. Reagan's care, which will primarily be custodial."

13. ?????????????????
I agree with you in part. But Alzheimers is a chronic condition of the elderly. It is not his own fault. BTW- I work in the welfare state and I am still dealing with his cuts

20. Yes, it is his fault
We could have had a cure if he hadn't cut funding. What's hard to understand about that?

And BTW, I hate him for more than that. He cut funding into cancer research when my 25 year old husband was undergoing chemo.

26. His policies were despiccable, yet I don't blame those inflicted with
illness. That is, after all, what the RW has been doing for twenty years now with those suffering from AIDS....

Did he suffer the aftermath of his short-sided policies that might have resulted in earlier breakthroughs in Alzheimer care and prevention-- most likely. Sadly we all will suffer from that as well as his detested attitude towards AIDs research and prevention. But, arguably it is Nancy and family that is bearing the brunt of those policies. We can only hope will counter some of the damage, by strongly speaking out on the need for stem cell research and through her advocacy for the remainder of her life...

38. wtf?
I don't wish Alzheimer's on anyone, but how does that absolve him of being one of the shittiest motherfuckers to ever squat in the Oval Office?

His bad presidency is what we judge him for, which is COMPLETELY SEPARATE FROM THE DISEASE. One has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE OTHER.

Get that in your head, people! :nuke:

Makes me fucking sick that the newspapers are right in step with the whitewashing and sainthood. :puke: :hurts:

4. If so, that is totally disrespectful
I have agreed totally with people voicing their dislike of Reagan and his policies, but the line has to be drawn somewhere. I mean, why even go that far out of your way to be that disrespectful of the dead. I truly hope that didn't happen.

than the people who never met Reagan who are gonna go to weep and throw themselves on the coffin of a complete stranger. Or the people who are going to have a peek out of morbid curiosity.

10. Remember the week after Princess Di's death?
I worked in HMV and people were buying shitloads of that bloody Elton John single. One woman came up to me with a dozen singles and said 'I was on holiday in China, I had to get back as soon as I can. It's like losing a family member, it's just terrible'. I said 'Clearly no-one in your family has ever died'. It was my last day on that job, strangely enough.

Is he gonna ressurect it for everyone famous that dies? Thank god Reagan wasn't blonde.

Goodbye Nancy's Ron
Though I never knew you at all
You probably would've hated me
What with me being gay
But I made lots of cash
through your revised taxation structures
but then those air traffic controllers
did you have to fire them all?

And it seems to me you lived your life
like a man out of his depth
Never knowing what old Ollie North was doing
Yeah it seems to me that you probably should
not have signed the FTA
But you sang with Brian Mulroney at that summit.

34. He holds the dubious honour of most hated Canadian PM ever.
Popular hatred for Mulroney reduced the PC party from 169 seats and 43% of the vote to 2 seats and 16% of the vote in the 1993 election. He's renowned as a total joke.

19. I don't get the whole thing anyway... While I"m very glad they are having
a closed coffin (those open-coffin memorials are so bizarre to me), what is the point in going to see a flag draped coffin... Perhaps they think they are providing support to Nancy and family...?

At any rate, it seems to me that those of us who detested Reagan's policies and Presidency have had ten years of his total absence (and for all intents and purpose, death). That the woman felt compelled to go to the memorial at all, much less to give the finger to Reagan on camera amazes me... It just seems that that seething anger that she expresses (as well as many here) would have been re-focused by now. My anger is focused in the here and now on the Bush* cabal, the BFEE-enabling congress, and all who have so cynically exploited religion to justify the wanton destruction of this country's ideals and standing in the world.

8. Why not? Reagan went out of his way to enact policies that got
people killed. He ignored problems that were killing tens of thousands (AIDS). He got the poverty level up to 35%. How's that for "disrespecting" people?

Fuck him. I flip BOTH birds at his sorry ass.
