1. To quote Eddie Izzard:
(on the differences in language between his native England and the US) "For instance, you say 'erb, and we say herb... 'cause there's a fucking "H" in it!"

8. Maybe within the sound of Bow Bells.
You're talking Cockney--or the "Mockney" affectation many have taken to putting on (see: Guy Ritchie). Public school Brits don't drop their Hs. Remember: In Hartford, Hereford and Hampshire, hurricanes hardly ever happen.

3. equates to English pronunciation question: how do you pronounce the
letter "h"?

Aitch.

Haish.

One "h" (aitch) is a newer version of an English pronunciation and is the most common.

The other "h" (haish) is an Elizabethan version still heard in New England. Maybe elsewhere, but I grew up hearing it in NE.

7. This is the one thing that really pisses me off about the States
When I first came to live here I just couldn't believe that herb was pronounced as erb.

I was thinking, "What the fuck is with that?!"

It has a fucking "H" in it, for crying out loud!!!

17. That's it?! That's the best you can do?!
I can come up with more things that piss me off about the States (than a silent consonant) in a single session on the crapper. You, sir, are the very picture of equanimity! :D

What the heck! At least it's three squares and a bag over your head! Don't be scared...just tell 'em you're here for the Reagan funeral. You'll get released without questioning. ;)

16. No question - I AM Herb....
Under that definition (ala 7 herbs and spices), the H is SILENT.

As a proper name, even, the H used to be silent but is pronounced now.

I am Her-bert.

But then I used to pronounce hors d'oeuvres as Whores-de-vores... (I knew of "orderrvs" but had never put the word with the text until someone read it... - Even when I started programming, I kept saying things were depreciated instead of deprecated.
