6. in what sense???
If you are talking about going to the grocery store, or pumping gas or something like that, probably not, but nor should thin people. If you mean at home or something, well, just close the blinds as should thin people. Are you talking about a nude beach?? Sure, if a "fat" person wants to...Kevin.

29. That may have been inferred, but it wasn't implied.

For example:

Should round, blue objects be described as blue balls?

I didn't imply that round and blue were 'descriptive of each other'. I didn't imply that all blue objects are round, neither did I imply that all blue objects are blue.

Neither did I imply or mean to imply that there is some objective standard for 'ugliness' or 'fatness'. (see post 23)

20. Beauty is relative
We learn to define beauty by what is presented before us. Currently our sense of beauty is defined by the constant stream of young women modified beyond recognition. We have created an unreal model for people to aspire to. Its about time some reality was brought back before the public so we do not become entirely disenchanted with the human body and can only appreciate alien forms contructed in operating rooms.

23. I think this poll was illustrative of how people read into things.

For example: Many of the people who responded gave answers that seemed to indicate that they believed I am not fat or ugly. I don't know where they got that idea.

Some respondents seemed to think the question in some way implied that there is an objective standard for 'ugliness' or 'fatness' - there isn't, and no such standard was implied. It's up to each person taking the poll to decide what constitutes fat and ugly.

Finally, I got the distinct impression - perhaps I was wrong - that many posters believed I voted 'No' on this poll, or that I posted the poll in order to express the idea that fat, ugly people should not go naked. Anyone who believes either of those things is mistaken.

26. Actually, it's illustrative of
how you made a poll from only six words, two of which were "fat" and "ugly," in a forum where there have been many fights over the way DUers sometimes callously charactrize the physicality of others, and sometimes use hurtful words like "fat" and "ugly" in a way that is sure to offend.

This wasn't a psych experiment. This was flame bait, intended or otherwise.

27. Agree 100 percent
As someone who used to be quite obese I know how much those words hurt. Even after dropping a ton of weight my self-image is still shot to shit from years of hearing those words.

The last time I checked we were supposed to be the good guys. We were supposed to the the ones who had compassion for their fellow human beings. We were supposed to be the ones who didn't engage in hurtful name-calling and stereotyping people because they are "different".

One of my fondest wishes is that we could stop talking about weight for a while because collectively as a forum I think we've pretty much proved that we can't have the discussion without hurting people's feelings.

28. OK.
I didn't claim this thread was 'a psych experiment' - I'm not a psychologist and I don't conduct psych experiments. As to whether or not it is 'flamebait', that is a judgement just as subjective as whether or not someone is 'ugly'. BTW - are you saying you are opposed to flamebait?

I looked in the mirror and I was reminded of a line in a book where a character is described as "proof that some people should not go naked". I thought it was funny so I posted a poll. If anyone is offended because of my poll, they have leapt to a variety of conclusions as I have detailed. Sorry, but there is no right not to be offended. And I completely dispute the notion that simply using the phrase 'fat, ugly people' is somehow wrong.

Edited on Tue Jun-08-04 04:11 PM by WilliamPitt
See, you used more than six words to explain it. People leapt to conclusions because you provided none. You dropped a six-word brick, and now you're annoyed that some people are taking it wrong. Stop the presses.

As for liking 'flame bait,' I will give $100 in your name to DU for every thread and/or post of mine you can find which has me using rude words to describe how someone looks using six words or less.

35. I'm sorry,
but I don't know where you got the idea that I am annoyed. I didn't mean to post anything that indicated annoyance. If I did, then it is only because I failed to express myself well. For the record, no, I'm not annoyed.

Just like the 'annoyance' issue above, I don't know where you got the idea that I think you express yourself rudely. I didn't say that, and I didn't mean to imply it.

I think it was Jane Austin who wrote; "Don't take offense when none is intended." These are wise words and should be memorized.

I wonder: do African Americans take offense when someone born in racism calls them a nigger, then says, "uh, boy, I don't mean any offense; that's just the way I talk."

42. I think the point here...
is that all insults hurt people.

It's pitiful that we as human beings seem to always need someone to make fun of. We've come a long way in terms of convincing people that making fun of others over race or ethnicity is not acceptable. But too many people still seem to think it's ok to make fun of people because they are overweight or unattractive. And woe betide if you happen to be both.

It's juvenile. It's petty. It's small.

45. Yes.
Insults hurt people.

However there was no insult given. I posted a poll that said "Should fat, ugly people go naked?" Did I insult someone? Who?

Simply using the words 'fat' or 'ugly' does not insult anyone.

To illustrate my point: labelling someone a 'genius', far from being an insult, is a compliment.

If I were to post a poll that asked "Should geniuses have to do homework?" -- did I compliment somoneone? Who?

47. I can't decide if you are being...
disingenuous or just naive when you claim to not understand why people would take your original poll question and assume insulting intent behind it. To ask if "fat, ugly people should go naked" implies that there is some reason they should not. I think it's pretty obvious that the implication is there given the responses on this thread. No one ever really asks whether "skinny, beautiful people should go naked".

and fat and ugly are both words generally used to insult people so if people were offended and reacted that way, can you honestly blame them?
