3. Does the lady have any hobbies?
Would she like any new ones? Usually these are things that make great retirement presents.

One Christmas my Dad gave my Mom all the equipment to do oil paintings because she always watched these shows on public television. She got really good at it before, sadly, she lost her eyesight. I still prize one of the paintings she did for me.

11. We did this for Christmas for my daughter's teacher
we thought the same thing ... that if she's teaching she probably likes to read. We'll probably do it every year for the teachers ...

friend's mom has pictures of past classes, school activities...etc., perhaps your friend could gather them together and put them in a scrapbook. Nothing fancy, just dates and places if he/she likes. I am doing this for my son's kindergarten teacher and have done it for other people as well. The joy she will derive from looking back on a fabulous career and seeing the changes she made in the lives of others is a wonderful gift.

Laura

On edit: these work especially well with lower grade teachers as they usually have lots of pictures. :)

6. A couple of thoughts
I'm thinking if she has a good sense of humor then go with 2 gifts...one funny and one serious. My funny gift would be one of those little teddy bears with the cap and gown on that they do for graduates and a card congratulating her on FINALLY making it out of the 3rd grade. :)

For a serious present...that's a lot harder without knowing the mom in question. I know one of the things I wish I had the money to do for my parents is send them on a cruise or a vacation somewhere they've always wanted to go.

10. I would get her something personalized.
There are two good Web sites that I have shopped at for personalized gifts.
