6. Bloody awful...
there was no chemistry at all. We had a nice chat & everything, but there was no spark from either of us.

It was just bland, which is worse than really bad, at least then everyone could have had a laugh at it.

But thanks for your interest & support, I'll try to do better next time.

I guess it goes to show that a drunken snog doesn't mean that, in the cold light of day, we really had anything between us.

When closing time pick-ups see the light of day........it can be scary.

At least you followed up. Good luck with future attempts.

13. It's not that she wasn't good looking,
it's just there was no je ne sais quoi. She's very pretty, but when we got talking, we really didn't have much in common, and as I say there was no immediate spark when I saw her.

I'll let you know about any future attempts, in the mean time I'll go back to net-flirting with DU girls.

15. Not bad,
for how lunch went see posts 6 & 13.

But I'm surprisingly cheerful, I suppose because I followed it up, had I not I would have been kicking myself for months - now I at least know there was nothing between us.

there's people who need sympathy far more than me. I hate people feeling sorry for me - I have a pretty good life, it's just love I'm unlucky in (and cards too).

12. good morning everyone!
It's 3:10 am...51 degrees under cloudy skys...I did 3.38 miles today with a peak heart rate of 144 bpm (I was writing bps which would be beats per second...and boy would that be a fast heart rate!). I added two 3 lb dumbbells to the walk the other day and I'm now using them on every other 3/4 mile. I will eventually use them for the whole walk. Everythings good and I have to do some guitar work right now, so everyone take care and have a great day.

But I understand that it depends on location. But people tell me it's kickin!

Projected run numbers for 2004 are based upon year 2000 runs of 35,000 kings and year 2001 runs of 30,000 kings. Assuming average reproduction success rates for parents of 2000-2001 offspring, we should expect another above average run of king salmon this coming summer on the Deshka, Lake Creek and the entire Mat-Su valley!

22. Hey, do the dumbells really do any good?
Mornin', cleofus1 and all.

cleo: Do the dumbells work? Mrs. Cat and I do 3 miles a day, and it has become too easy, but she is short on time in the afternoon and we can't possibly add another mile or two. When we were out yesterday, she suggested the dumbells. Any tips/resources?

25. yes the dumb bells do work...
I think if you have been walking for a while you can probably add them with little problem. If at first it is too much just use lighter weights at first and then when that becomes too easy increase the size.

I can just imagine wrenching or throwing out some vital joint. Is there a WebMd-type site for fitness?

28. here's some info

Focus on miles, not minutes.
When you start your walking workout, don't be intimidated if you can't keep pace with the time suggestions here. These are your ultimate goals, but the health and weight-loss benefits of walking are measured in number of steps, not minutes. Even if it takes you 20 minutes to walk a mile instead of the 13-minute ideal, don't give up. Your first goal is to reach the 10,000-steps marker, then worry about whittling down the time it takes to reach it. Do a little more each day, but don't overdo it. Good luck! (If you've never exercised or haven't done so in a while, check with your doctor first.)

The only gizmo you need

How do you know how many steps you're really taking? clip a pedometer onto your waistband and find out. 2000 steps is app one mile

How to customize your workout:
A pedometer registers step count, but maximum health benefits also require the right exertion level. Rule of thumb: If you can't catch your breath enough to say hi to a friend, slow down. Able to belt out your favorite song, no problem? You're taking it too easy. To up your workout ante, consider these variations:

Increase your pace, not your stride. Taking more steps per minute instead of longer ones not only helps you walk faster (a 12- to 13-minute mile is optimal), it also elevates your heart rate without increasing your risk of injury.
Pretend you're on a tightrope. Professional walkers place one foot directly in front of the other, as opposed to taking hip-width strides. Follow suit, and you'll increase your energy output and use more major muscle groups.
Work your arms. Bend your elbows at a 90-degree angle and pump them back and forth as you step. This propels you forward faster and burns more calories.
Head for the hills! Adding an angle is the surest way to increase the intensity of your walking workout. If you're on a treadmill, use the elevation button.
Use weights or walking sticks -- both give a more complete workout. The two dumbbells should weigh less than 10 percent of your body weight. Walking sticks (not to be confused with the kind Granddad may have sported) increase energy expended by 20 percent.

31. Thanks! I'm also wondering about the use of the dumbells,
such as the arm angle/motion and appropriate wieght of the dumbells.
Do you have any advice?
Thanks again!

30. wow maybe I will rethink the weight thing...
You've probably seen them -- those walkers who have a death-grip with each hand on a weight as they march along, or perhaps someone who has ankle weights strapped on snugly.

Maybe you've tried that routine yourself in an attempt to burn more calories.

Long story short: Don't do it. In most cases, carrying weights burns only a fraction more calories, while setting you up for potential injury because your natural walking movement gets thrown askew, ligaments and tendons are weakened and stretched, or blood pressure increases from gripping the handweights.

Here's the why's and where-fors and some better ways to pump up your calorie use without hanging weights off your body.

Handweights
To increase calorie use when holding weights, you must swing your arms. A lot. But that can also throw off your stride, and strain muscles and ligaments, as well as raise your blood pressure, or tire your arm and shoulder muscles before your legs. Tire arms will mean an early end to your walk since you'll be dying to put down the weights. The way to burn calories and to pump up aerobic fitness and health is to have an extended workout, not stressful 10-minute session with aching, tired muscles.

I think that I just have to expand beyond the 3mi walk and anticrunches.

Getting away from this computer would help, too!
