1. Read this week's New Yorker.
An excellent article about why Republicans love PBS now.

2. It's maddening
I don't appreciate it. Tucker Carlson couldn't hold my attention for 5 minutes let alone a whole show.

7. Tucker Carlson is a poofy haired, right wing weenie.
Why in God's name Bill Moyers is leaving and Tucker Carlson is getting a show is one of the most saddest things that's come along in a long time.

4. It's all about Newt Gingrich's attack on federal funding
for such organizations back in the early 90s, and their necessity to rely on corporate underwriting for programming. Money talks. Archer-Daniels-Midland and Shell Oil tend to like programming that doesn't upset the animals too much.

NPR has suffered from the same constraints. It's all part of Newtie's 'Contract With (On) America' -- they don't believe in the Fairness Doctrine, and they don't think the gummint oughta' fund a liberal mouthpiece. They want everything to come from a comfortable, right-wing perspective so they don't have to think about their failures, and they want to control every single news outlet so that those failures are spun as successes or simply not mentioned. So they've legislated and forced publicly-funded organizations to 'go along to get along' by squeezing them so tightly that they have to rely on corporations to continue their existence at all.

Privatization -- gotta love it. Oh, wait -- no I don't, either!

8. Sadly, I agree
PBS is what I spent most of my time TV time watching... that and Joss Whedon shows.

So now, who knows?

9. Well, for now, look at where you are.
I think a lot of us have resorted to the Internet as entertainment, because we don't get what we want out of commercial networks or PBS/NPR anymore. I get most of my news out of the LBN forum here, and links off blogs like Eschaton. I quit watching TV almost ten years ago, now -- I remember making the decision around that time, that I could afford either to have an Internet service or get cable for my TV. I signed up on AOL (at the time, it was about the best option I had where I was) and I've never gone back.

The great thing about the Internet is that anybody who can afford to provide the forum can allow or encourage just about any flavor of idea. Of course, eventually the Newtians will have to figure out a way to spin the Internet, too, but I think the technology lags, right now. They can't control this, right now, so until they figure out a way to nanny the crap out of the World Wide Web, this is my alternative source of entertainment.

10. No.
PBS used to be fair. But to be fair is to be biased against Republicans (so saith the Republicans). So they took it over. Now it is fair and balanced, which means that for everything that might be construed as being hurtful to Republicans will be balanced by a pro-Republican piece. No such consideration need to be given to Democrats.
