VCR recommendations
My nice old Sony SLV-N55 is giving out, with streaking artifacts from the record circuits. Does anyone have suggestions for a good VCR or VCR-DVD that's currently avaiable? Even as VCR quality going downhill since VCR-DVDs are now the rage, I'm still hoping for a good clear VCR with a nice display so I know what it's up to.

1. Have you considered Tivo
If you need a VCR to record programs, have you considered tivo

www.tivo.com

I just purchased a toshiba tivo/dvd combo for $299 and it is AMAZING.

Otherwise, I have had good luck with Toshiba and sony brands.

2. The best I found, albeit 1 earth year ago, was
the Daewoo DV-T8DN.

Video quality is great.

Audio quality is good, but is sensitive to audio - you can hear buzz noises if the tracking is off. This problem is also somewhat random, repeating the scene may sometimes work without incident. :eyes:

My 2 year old Sony OTOH is GREAT with audio but whose gamma is off, resulting in a brighter-than-ought-to-be video. This gamma setting is typical of all Sony VCRs, I discovered.

This is a shit situation because I want to transfer my VHS tapes to DVD with the highest quality possible.

I therefore use Daewoo and forget the sony.

AVOID JVC LIKE YOU WOULD WITH REPUKES. They make pure JUNK. I bought one - DOA. Exchanged it, the replacement one's eject failed after inserting 1 tape. I was lucky to get it out.
