Luis Royo! (here's a sample)

Its a live journal post, whuch is a small Luis Royo gallery. There are some partialy nude women, but it's art, Maybe not "work safe" though. FYI
Lemme know what you think. Take a peak if you are not familiar with his work.

2. I hesitate to say it
but this reminds me of a Bloom County series, right at the end of the strip's run, when the characters went looking for work in other cartoons. Steve Dallas went to a superhero comic, and all the female superheroes were walking around...swords, size Google-E breasts, nipples that could break rocks...

...and Steve said, "You guys didn't get a lot of dates in school, right?"

The cartoonist replied, "Pretty much."

Hmmm...

Folks, as someone who has been pen and paper role-playing for nigh on 20 years, and as a chick, this is standard fare; more of the same old. Technically it's well-enough done, but uninspired.

Its just the Genre. Frazettas women were always way to muscular, and freaky looking. Boris Vallejo used to be that way, but not as much. Royos women are strong leaders, and I like that. Vallejo tends to have women appear as victims, and in general seems more sexist. Taht's just my 2 cents.

If you like pin up art (I've done a bit of it myself-in fact, I'm drawing Jessica Rabbit all this week for the mouse, which is a little like pin ups, lol!)then Google "Gil Elvgren" he's the artist's artist of Pin up!

Here's some line art of mine, done for a product line that "Perfect ten" magazine never produced :-( :

No one has done pin-up like Vargas. Luminous, ethereal, delicate watercolours, amazing skill at rendering things like see-through fabric with fluidity, grace and subtlety...

Here's a Vargas of one of my favourite silent film stars (Louise Brooks).

31. Sorry. This is NOT art. It's fantasy ILLUSTRATION.
It is technically well done, but not particularly "artistic".

There is a very big difference between "art" and "skilled craftmanship." Many tend to assign the name "art" to things which are merely good draftsmanship, or even excellent draftsmanship, or even superb draftsmanship. But the word "art" should be reserved for things that are truly artistic.

34. All in the eye of the beholder
while I agree with you in regards to what's posted here (that includes my own drawing) is illustration, as an art instructor, there are more components to "art" than excellent draftsmanship There is composition, technique, concept, color, etc What separates a Rembrandt from a Rockwell? Not much. Rembrandt's "night watch" was basically a portrait commissioned by a group of clients, and since the painting "illustrates" a story it really is only separated by...what? Execution? Isn't that "craft"?

I don't like Jeff Koontz's art, but since thousands of people see three basketballs suspended in an aquarium as "art" I won't argue with them.

from a photo from this photo shoot:

I dont have the exact pose, but I have seen that photo. And will al do respect, Royo's work is a bit more intricate than that. I realize it's a different style, and copied from a photo and not an original work, perhaps I just don't understand art.

Edited on Wed Jun-09-04 11:28 PM by Jen6
Did you look at the rest of his work? He has his own style, and is a hell of a draftsman. Most artists-even fantasy artists-use models or photos. I didn't in my own drawing (can't remember the post #) but since I'm a woman, I'm my own reference. Guys generally need models.

It's all a matter of taste. A lot of artists use loads of detail to compensate for poor draftsmanship, composition, color work, technique, etc. I've taught college illustration courses, and I was on the artists review board for Walt Disney Feature animation. I've weeded out hundreds of portfolios that were detail heavy but lacking in important skills.Phil passed the board and has become a very successful artist in his own right. But if you don't like his work, that's fine! Just sharing.

to the "bodice", the hair skin color, the outfit. He just took out the tattoo. And yes alot of artists use models, but don't copy exact photos most likely without the permission of the model.

43. As I said on my edit
If you don't appreciate his art, that's fine. And yes, millions of artists use models photos without their permission. I had a famous actresses photo on my studio wall and was using it for reference when the famous actress visited the studio and saw it.She made a bit of scene, but she didn't give the studio any legal trouble about it. She was flattered, in fact. The art went into a character that was part of an academy nominated film for best picture, but she has no case or claim to anything. Once artwork or photos are "interpreted", they are considered new and original material, similar to music sampling.

It is not an interpretation it is a copy of the photographer's work, and not just copying the likeness of Miss Hel . Or are you saying photographers don't have a right to have their work copyrighted?
I never said I didn't like your friend's work. I merely pointed out that it was just a copy of someone else's photo. I did try to look at the site you gave, but all I got was the home page and no links to anywhere. Iam sure he has an immense body of original work, just not in this case.

57. Ok, here's my thoughts on the picture
I'm going to take this element by elemant. I'm not trying to piss you off, I'm explaining why I don't think it's a very good picture.

First, what the F is going on here? It's called THE_ULTIMATE_SWORD_OF_POWER_1995, but the two swords in the picture are almost identical. Which one is the ultimate? I'm confused.

The chick. Hottie. But no reaction to the evil creature in the back? She looks bored. I don't think boredom should be an issue here.

The Stonehenge thing. The rocks are small, if you stood the chick up, she'd be in danger of trampling (obligatory Spinal Tap ref) seeing over them. They should be huge compared to the people.

The dude with the sword. He's looking at it like he was wishing it were his dick. "Damn, if you were my dick, I'd stroke you allll day". And what's with the pose? Is this a dance tryout? Why is he even there? See next

The guy with the cane. Here's the only guy actually ready to kick some ass, but he isn't armed with a sword. Okay. Some sword of ultimate power, he must be the new guy.

The demon in back. He looks like he's yelling "Hey! Hey you guys! I'm OVER HERE!!!" Seriously, he's tiny. His sword is no bigger either. Some phallic symbolism

Now to the composition.

The rocks should be enormous if they are supposed to instill any kind of awe. They should reach up to or beyond the top of the canvas. But they don't, this looks like it's to provide room for the sky. He didn't do anything with the sky however, he could have made the demon being dropped down by a glowing tornado piercing through almost black skies. That would have created some dynamic, but it's all very plain. Back to people, they all look like they've been dropped in a painting game of Boggle. The dude is cleary uninterested in fighting, he's rather look at himself and do David Copperfield poses. The chick couldn't give a shit about any of it, and is probably hoping someone's sword slips and cuts her head off. The little dude up front probably got bored and went to go poke that very unthreatening demon thing with his pointed stick.

So that's why I don't think this picture is good composition-wise. He's talented with the tools, but his selection of subjects and layout is miserable.

47. Bad composition, poor technique, for starters
Edited on Thu Jun-10-04 12:02 AM by Jen6
I'm speaking strictly as a professional and an art educator here, I can't speak for the previous poster. The pose of the woman is well conceived, but the figure behind her reads poorly. And what is the man with the sword reacting to? There is too much negative space above the Stonehenge like structure; it becomes a dominant element because there isn't distinct differences in sizes between the characters below it. Try this: make each of the characters into a graphic shape; blow up the horned demonic guy about 300%, put him behind the stone circle and raise him up until the tip of his sword touches the edge of the painting. See?

Another problem; the over use of airbrushing. Generally, that effect should only be used sparingly. I could go on, but I've got work of my own to get back to.If you enjoy the art, that's all that matters. I'm glad to see any traditional illustrator succeed these days. The computer revolution has turned a lot of us into dinosaurs.

52. I'm with Jen6. Where's the focal point?
A good composition should direct your eye around the piece. I don't know which element to look at first-they all fight for my attention.
I hate to sound cruel (I'm not, really). This just seems like hack work (stylistically which derives from another popular artist; ie Vallejo)-the same kind of stuff I see a thousand different artists do all the time.
Anyway, art is subjective. There are alot of trained artists here and sometimes we see things from a different perspective. I'm sure I may like alot of stuff others think is crap.
