Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town
Ruby, are you contemplating going out some where?
The shadow on the wall tells me, the sun is going down
Oh, Ruby, don't take your love to town
It wasn't me who started that old crazy Asian war,
But I was proud to go and do my patriotic choir
And yes, it's true that I am not the man I used to be
Oh, Ruby, I still need some company
It's hard to love a man whose legs are bent and paralyzed
And the wants and the needs of a woman your age, Ruby, I realize
But it won't be long, I've heard them say, until I'm not around
Oh, Ruby, don't take your love to town
She's leaving now, 'cause I just heard the slamming of the door
The way I know I've heard it slam a hundred times before
And if I could move, I'd get my gun and put her in the ground
Oh, Ruby, don't take your love to town
Oh, Ruby, for God's sake turn around

Kenny Rogers

1. Yeah, the same guy that Just Dropped In To See What Condition My
Condition Was In.

Strange, isn't it? From that to Lucille. What a change.

4. Frickin' gambler. What does he expect?
A woman has needs, you know. You can sing about how she decorated your life all you want, but the coward of the county's still got a bigger *#@! than you!

Besides, anyone who covers Bob Seger ought to know that the shit is gonna hit the fan!

6. Some interesting facts about "Ruby"
"Ruby" was written by country singer Mel Tillis in 1966, it was recorded two years before Kenny Rogers and the First Edition by
Johnny Darrell (who I've never heard of!).

According to Tillis, it was based on a true story about some neighbors from his childhood, a vet injured in WW2 and who spent time in an English hospital, where he met and married a nurse. They moved to Florida, where his injuries kept him returning to the hospital...While he was ther, his wife started seeing other men. Tillis says he used to hear a lot of hollering and arguing coming from their house.
He changed a few things, like from WW2 to Vietnam but he says "It could have been any war."
He also changed the ending, in real life the couple's problems ended in a murder-suicide.
