Jimmy Kimmel's Show Kicked Off ABC
Temporarily anyway. I guess some Detroiters really don't have a sense of humor about the fire thing. Funny, I was caught in the first post-Piston Championship riot, and I laughed. ;-)

AUBURN HILLS -- It all started with ABC late-night talk show host and comedian Jimmy Kimmel making a not-so-funny joke about Detroit on Tuesday's Game 2 halftime show of the NBA Finals.

One wonders if Kimmel is laughing now, since his show was temporarily pulled off the air across the nation on Wednesday evening.

Kimmel's show did not air, because of yet more disparaging remarks about Detroit in Wednesday's show. ABC refused to air the episode.

1. This is re-god-damn-diculous. He didn't even make disparaging remarks
Edited on Thu Jun-10-04 04:02 PM by Bombtrack
about Detroit. He simply joked that "I'm glad the Lakers are winning, not only because I'm a fan, but because if the Pistons win, the fans will burn down the city and it's really not worth it"

I have absolutely no proof of it, but I really suspect the same corporate media suck-asses at Disney/ABC that got Bill Maher fired, tried to screw Michael Moore from getting distributed, were looking for a reason to can Jimmy because it's quite clear that Jimmy want's Bush out of office.

Jimmy's hero's and idol's are Dave Letterman and Howard Stern, and he does have similarly scathing ways of turning his audience against Bush and, now the FCC. He regularly plays bits of the 700 Club to show how hilarious they are, and he has a weekly segment lampooning the fascism of the FCC called "this week in unnecessary censorship". He also was THE person before Howard Stern to show the Oprah/salad tossing clip that made her the most complained about person to the FCC

Only, unlike Stern and Letterman, he isn't an institution and doesn't have their huge ratings and is therefor more vulnerable and easier to take out.

PLEASE E-MAIL Jennifer Granholm and Kwame Kilpatrick and tell them it's not right to be censored for humor.

12. THAT'S the reason???
Doesn't sound like that inflammatory a remark.

That, and I read earlier about Morrissey getting harrassed for making anti-Bush remarks ("I wish he died rather than Reagan").

Geez! People need to lighten up.

21. Here's kimmel's apology
"What I said about Pistons fans during halftime was a joke, nothing more. If I offended anyone, I'm sorry," he said. "Clearly, over the past 10 years, we in L.A. have taken a commanding lead in post-game riots. If the Lakers win, I plan to overturn my own car."

It is so sad that this kind of fascistic political correctness is associated more with the left than right.

I notice all the DUer's who called me and all other Stern listeners brainless sexist perverts for just liking his program have shut up about him since my and other's opinion that he could help Kerry and democrats has come to fruition.

33. Unfortunately, he doesn't
Not if he's talking about the when the Pistons won the championships.

I got stuck in the middle of that mess while trying to get home from work that night, and I can tell you for a fact that in NW Detroit where I lived at the time there was vandalism and violence. I'm not happy or proud about that, but I'm not going to lie and say it didn't happen, particularly when I witnessed it. Hell, Anne Thompson (formerly of WDIV, now with NBC News) made her career that night, reporting live while her car window was being broken in by "revelers".

Of course, when I moved to Chicago and the Bulls began their championship streak, there was plenty of rioting and violence here too. Maybe it's all my fault. }(

9. Bull
Just another smear.

I just came back from the Tigers game, downtown at the new baseball stadium. You know where that is? It's right next to the brand new football stadium. Across the street from the refurbished Opera House and the beautifully restored Fox Theater. Down the street from the newly expanded Orchestra Hall, not far from the three new casinos and a few blocks from the brand new Compuware corporate headquarters.

38. People still say the same thing about Baltimore
Baltimore's downtown, and many other districts have had a renaissance. 15-20 years ago, Baltimore's downtown was filthy, full of abandoned buldings, rotting wharves, sleazy bars. Now it has two of the nicest stadiums, incredible hotels, some of the best resturants and nightclubs, and some of the best shopping anywhere.
I know what you mean about Detroit. Sometimes, if you haven't seen something in a long time, you might not even recognize it.

19. Drive in from the suburbs much?
Or did you visit once, in 1981? :eyes:

See, if you're going to make a Detroit joke, try to make sure it's funny or at least truthful. The only thing burning in downtown Detroit recently was the electronic music festival at Hart Plaza.

22. You must be mistaken!
There's no electronic music festival in Detroit, only crime!
No Downtown Hoedown, just crack dealers!
No Tastefest, or Festival of the Arts, or Jazz Festival, just muggers, and there isn't anyone eating at the restaurants or going to the clubs, there's just a lot of rioters.
Nobody is shopping at Eastern Market or studying at Wayne State or visiting the museums, that's an illusion, they are all really drug dealers in disguise!
And don't forget all those miscreants cleverly disguising themselves as Lion or Tigers or Red Wings fans. Or the arsonists shopping at John King Books or the shady characters who work at GM headquarters.

6. Actually, it wasn't funny. It was mean spirited and it made me feel sick.
First, it's like mocking the Irish about the potato famine. Trashing Detroit is NOT funny. This is a once-proud city that is the victim of blight and unless you like to laugh at joblessness, crumbling infrastucture, poor schools, high crime, and a burned out city core, then there is nothing funny about it.

Second, Detroit has won a number of sports championships recently, and there have been no riots and no violence.

Third, Detroit is really proud of the Pistons and the entire town has rallied around the team. It was a completely feel-good experience.

Fourth, L.A. has actually experienced rioting during some of THEIR recent championships, so it also wasn't true.

I thought it was a cheap shot, un-sporting, un-called for, "kick 'em when they're down" bunch of CRAP. Worse, he did this on prime-time national television, live, and even made the announcers interviewing him uncomfortable.

Screw Jimmy Kimmel. This is not about *, this is about Jimmy Kimmel being a decent human being. I couldn't believe I heard him say that. It was a really awful moment for me.

7. Detroit: Code word for "niggers"
What a load of crap. This racist ass attacks Detroit, a city of hard working DEMOCRATIC voters and "liberals' Jump to his defense.

Detroit's record in these matters is no worse than any other American city. Everyone who lives in this area knows full well what jerks like Kimmel are really saying when they attack Detroit.

You know how those *ahem* Detroiters are. *wink wink*

I'm disgusted to see his comments defended here.

20. Yeah, Kimmel is a real racist, his best friend is Mexican and his
girlfriend is jewish.

And the "Tony Randal"(go-to fill in guest) of his show is a black guy.

You need to have your head checked. Jimmy Kimmel is not a racist, nor was his comment. Nor does a comment dealing with a stereotype or generalization of a place or a culture in a humourous manor neccessitate a person being bigoted to speak it. It's really disturbing how warped people can get. You know what, alot of people here make overreaching remarks about the southern united states and racism, does that make them anti-white?

I'd like to fire the PC police at DU

Edited on Thu Jun-10-04 06:29 PM by Champ
For years I've heard comedians make fun of Los Angelians over riots after the Lakers won their first finals with Kobe and Shaq. He probaly should've done his homework before he said something like that but I highly doubt he meant racism when he said that. He is a comedian, comedians try to be funny for the sake of $$. Don't take everything a comedian says seriously. Plus he hardly seemed racist seeing how he is good friends with alot of the black entertainers and actors in the Los Angeles Area.

25. Uhh, he was talking about the NBA finals, where only 2 teams
represented by 2 cities, one of which he was rooting for, were playing.

And Detroit does have a HISTORIC REPUTATION, deserved or undeserved, of unrest after major events. And just because it has a majority black population does not allow any fair person of any reasonable logic, which you clearly can't grasp, to make the leap of labeling that person a racist just for joking about that city that happens to be black.

That is no less idiotic than calling a person a racist for making fun of a celebrity that happens to be black.
