Am I wrong for hating all those "American Flag" bumper stickers.
For me, all that they represent is the ignorance that is the American public. Nationalistic pride. Being extremely opinionated and the only information you have to back it up is half-assed at best. The ability to regurgitate random facts to help suit your own fascist opinion's about anyone that is different then you. An inability to see the problem from the other persons eyes.

The one that PISSES me off the most is the "Power of Pride" bumper sticker. I mean for Chrtist's fucking sakes. If this country doesn't see that pride was one of our biggest vices, that allowed Sept. 11th to happen.

I'm just kinda feeling down about it. I never hated the American flag. Now it i'm revolted by it. Everything that it represents makes me sick.

1. I know what you mean
I've decided to take back my flag. As soon as I get a Kerry bumpersticker, I'm going to get a flag decal and plaster it on right next to Kerry. I already took back Jesus with a "Jesus is a liberal" bumpersticker.

2. Nothing wrong with disgust at bumper stickers
Although it is somewhat sad that the past few years have made the American Flag revolting. But think about it: do you feel revulsion because of the flag itself or because of the actions taken in the name of it?

To add a bit more commentary: I too dislike the "Power of Pride" stickers - they seem to be placed by those who hide behind the flag, rather than those who fight in front of it and for it

3. Wouldn't excessive display of the flag indicate...
...a nationalistic mentality. And isn't extreme nationalism one of the tenets of fascism. Just asking.

7. Well while excessive display of the flag would indicate that,
I actually believe the nationalistic mentality is more apparent then the flag itself. Which says something considering every asshole in the street has one on there car.

4. I got to the point that when I went to buy stamps, they wanted to give
me the American flag one and I said "No. I want flowers, cars, trains, anything that is not a flag." The woman looked at me weird, but gave me toy train stamps. AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH

10. The flag can represent many things . . .
In my neighborhood, we have several immigrant families from Bosnia, Greece, Iraq among others.

They proudly dislay the flag, not from a nationalistic sense, but because of a gratitude that they are able to find here things that they could not find in their home.

In my mind, the greatest part of America is the right to dissent. That's what the flag represents to me. All opinions are welcome.

Is that the way it is in practice? Maybe not, as there are many voices who remain muted, but the goal remains.

I have a flag on the back of my car, and I know what it means to me. But I also respect anyone who chooses not to display it. Hell, I'll even respect someone who wants to destroy it, I'll just respectfully disagree.

14. flags and yellow ribbons ...
empty symbols for empty minds. Living in good Christian GOP land has made me agnostic and anti-flag. Shame too 'cause I used to love all the trappings and symbolism. Now I see a flag bumber sticker and I have a Pavlovian reaction :puke: to the mindset it represents. When I see the yellow ribbons, I want to yell: ribbons ain't shit; if you really cared about supporting the troops, you'd be fighting for full VA funding, etc. And as for the God Bless America banners ... gag, choke and more :puke:

PS: right now in order to avoid the Reagasm on the networks and cable news, I'm watching Mississippi Burning on AMC. Being about the slaying of the civil rights workers in 1964 and recalling how Reagan kicked off his 1980 campaign where they were murdered has my blood boiling even more.

15. Watching flag wavers is like...
Edited on Fri Jun-11-04 06:17 PM by tjwash
...watching a teenagers strange obsession with Michael Jackson; It's mildly amusing if watching from a distance, but extremely frightening close up. I am on an HOA board, and the most vulgar, crude people, we have, who are always disturbing the neighbors and breaking all the rules, are also the flag-waving dubya supporting nit-wits. There is one person, who has had their flag up since 9-11, day and night (without the required illumination at night I might add), and now it is less of a flag, and more of a faded multi-colored rag. Numerous people have complained about it, so they have been receiving letters to either change or dispose of the current one.

Talk about foul, crude language in a reply letter. They are probably good god-fearing Christians too...

On edit: Of course by flag wavers, I am refering to nationalistic, "my country right or wrong", jingo spouting thugs, who act less like Americans, and more like German brownshirts.

I myself have my flag out on weekends, and holidays when I am home. It was a gift from my brother.

16. That's a tough one...
Edited on Fri Jun-11-04 06:04 PM by KzooDem
The flag of ANY nation is an important symbol to be respected and honored, but I have to tell you...I think our American flag has become a fetish for many, and a prop for nationalists trying to pass themselves off as patriotic Americans.

Other countries are respectful of their flags, but we are unique in treating it like a sacred, religious symbol.

I don't think you should hate the flag bumperstickers, or the flag per se. We need to do what we can to reclaim our democracy in November so we can reclaim our flag and the principles for which it really represents.

I choose not to fly a flag at my house not because I am ashamed of the flag as a symbol, but because I am ashamed at what it has come to stand for under the current menace otherwise known as the Bush Administration.

On the day John F. Kerry takes the oath of President of the United States, I will display the flag on my porch because I will know that it will once again represent all that is good about our country.

18. "Power of pride" - once again, mainstream US rips off homosexuals...
and without a thoughtful meaning behind it.

For mainstream America, any jingoism or style they 'borrowed' exists for the sake of conformity. There is no individuality or freedom involved with said jinogism or style. It's just there to make money

And that's all that needs to be said.
