Local Christians face discrimination
Written by davoarid
TEMPE, AZ- Jerome Johnson appears to be a normal person on the outside. A young, good-looking teacher in Tempe, he appears to have everything going for him. However, he has one dirty secret that causes him to face discrimination every day: He's a Christian.
"People have no idea how tough it is to be a Christian in America, the most Christian nation in the world," Johnson said. "Every day, I get dirty looks by people on the street, my family has disowned me; it's a living nightmare. Hardly a minute goes by that I don't hear some redneck shout a Christian epithet to me. And don't even think about catching a cab late at night if you've accepted Christ as your personal savior."
Johnson's problems started in 1998. A new teacher at George Washington Elementary School in Tempe, he wanted to take a small amount of time out of each day to spread the word of Christ. "All I asked was for six hours a day to preach Christ's message to my 5th grade class, yet the secular principal wouldn't allow it. He said it violated the separation of church and state. I just didn't understand," said Johnson. "I set aside a special corner of the room for the hell-bound dissenters; there was no coercion for them to join in."
