3. "Bring me my famly"
That movie was great. The guy who played Jim Jones did a wonderful job. It's scary how people can be sucked into a cult so easily. You're right that people should be reminded of this.

5. The voters probably wouldn't make the connection.
If they can't see through Bush's transparent BS by now, they're definitely not going to find the similarities between the Jonestown cult and Bush's agenda.

I'd rather see 24/7 coverage of "they can strike us in 45 minutes" and "nukyuler (sic) weapons" and "imminent threat" and all of the other bogus reasons they gave for starting this ridiculous war.

7. Look at this and tell me who it remid you of ?
Ms. Layton advised that "Rev. Jones...claimed that he was the reincarnation of...Lenin, Jesus Christ ...had divine powers." And further stated that Jones also "appeared deluded by a paranoid vision of the world. He would not sleep for days at a time and talk compulsively about the conspiracies against him." The compound "was swarming with armed guards no one was permitted to leave unless on a special assignment," Layton said. Jim Jones warned "that the time was not far off when it would become necessary for to die by own hands," she added. A so-called "White Night" or "state of emergency" was often declared at the compound and within this context mass suicide was rehearsed

Who do we know is delusional and thinking that they have divine intervention and was chosen to lead us into Iraq, and rid us of the evildoers. and according to some of the books out now have an Atty. General use Crisco on his head for prayer service as annointed. Who has no tolerance of any other religion? who thinks the liberals and all are totally against him personally, (well he may be right on that one) I can't stand him personally. That he has military and armies around him, afraid of the people? who uses the phrase, i can see into a man's soul? Yeah there are similarties! Curses every breath as Jim Jones did and then prasies the Lord in the next.

9. Not so sure

I read a Book about him and in it, there was a picture of him with Jimmy Cater. Not sure we want to trot it out.
Like Bush, Jones had a Narcissitic Personality Disorder. His had escalated into a messiah complex, of course. These guys are con artists in ways that are tough to comprehend. I think they work their charisma consciously.
The way the People's Temple wound up with so many African American members was that it started out practicing such goods works. One of it's major operations was to serve as a soup kitchen and sort of homeless shelter. (The place was ripe for faith based funding.)
People thought it was a wonderful thing because it was brand new. He seemed exceptionally compassionate to people. It was part of his con.
Bush makes himself seem exceptionally friendly. People feel like he's "on their level." This impresses people who have a sense that politicians talk down to them. His "stupidity" is part of it. There are a lot of people love it without knowing that that's what they're falling for.

10. You bring out excellent points..doesn't matter abou party though nuts is
Edited on Sun Jun-13-04 01:02 PM by vetwife
Nuts and to think that this guy was so good at fooling people just blows my mind. Jimmy Carter's sister is a little out there too.
Look at Zell preaching family values. I am a staunch democrat...But this religion and poltics thing scares me to death and I am a christian. If it scares me what in the world is it doing to other folks who are of other faiths? The koolaid Bush is serving up today makes folks as stupid as he is.
