Louise Brooks
I have fallen in love with a silent-screen actress, Louise Brooks. She has quite a following today, as measured by the numerous and affectionate websites devoted to her. Her movies reflect a contemporary, take-no-shit-from-nobody attitude. Allowing for the difference in clothing and hair styles between now and the 1920's, even her physical appearance is contemporary. See http://www.leatherockhotel.com/LouiseBrooks.htm

In The Show-Off, Brooks plays Clara, the girl next door to the Fisher family, and friend of Amy Fisher (yes, that's the name) who falls for a braggart and marries him. After his numerous frauds bring the family to ruin, Clara finally decides to stop being polite. In a dramatic confrontation, Clara declares: It's about time somebody put you wise to yourself . . . You're nothing but a four-flusher. The line is wonderfully triumphant, a clear victory for Clara.

A four-flusher is a poker player with four cards of the same suit, a worthless hand. He tries to win the pot by hiding the fifth card. The word fell out of favor but there are many contemporary four-flushers, people who have no right to scoop up the pot but do so anyhow. I wish we had a contemporary Louise Brooks to confront George Bush.

3. She was a beauty...
I always thought she was the most gorgeous woman of early Hollywood, head and shoulders above Clara Bow and others.

4. I had an assistant once who was the spitting image of
her-right down to the hairstyle. The men at my studio all had a crush on her, but she also had a similar "take no shit" attitude, and most of them couldn't cope with it. She usually dressed as Brookes for Halloween (sorry to report to the men on this board; she's married now).

I don't know what an M/A is. I guess if I was one, I'd know what it was.

I like the name SoDesuKa. It's an in joke to a very select crowd. I'm glad you remarked on it; nobody else has.

Sodesuka is a Japanese conversational expression meaning "You don't say!" or "I hear you."

At least, that's what I think it means. When I hear Japanese speakers, its function seems to be to encourage the speaker to continue.

I assume the term "M/A" has to do with speaking Japanese.

12. Oh cool!
that does sound right, actually. I don't speak Japanese, but having worked in retail in Seattle for over 20 years, I've picked up quite a bit of it. That's a great username! :hi:
