AAAAAAAACK! Advice needed PRONTO!
My younger brother just got arrested (non-violent misdemeanor) and needs $110 for bail. Tony thinks we should just pay it for him by credit card, and I think he should call my brother and sister-in-law to get it (he still lives with them).

Advice?

1. If they have the ready money, I'd see if they could do it. I hate
using credit cards these days. But if they can't, then I guess if I were you I'd go spring him. Hope all goes well!

2. whatever makes it easier on the family.
passing the buck might lead him to believe you aren't willing to help. If you can front the $110 I'd do it with the agreement that he pays it back to you at first chance.

4. We can afford it.
I'm just afraid he won't tell them, if we pay it.

3. Well, unless you think it would do him some good to...
... leave him there for a while, just bail him out and settle the differences later....

5. Oh, I'll not leave him to the tender mercies of the Cook Co. Jail...
26th and California is no place for an 18 year-old kid...

15. Isn't it gonna take you at least 3 hours to drive up here?
It'll be 1 AM before you can spring him.

Plan to get a motel room.

13. Get him out now,
That is no place for a non-violent misdemenor offense. He's probably already had the crap scared out of him.

Bail him out, take him home, and have a sit down with your relatives.

19. Ummm... anything with...
... Cook County and jail in the same phrase isn't too good. Yeah, get him out and settle up later.

6. Well it is his fault he got arrested, isn't it?
Edited on Mon Jun-14-04 08:41 PM by Massacure
If that's the case then shouldn't he bail himself out?

And I'll not leave him in jail for a misdemeanor.

23. Unless he does this a lot
I would get him out forthwith. Jail is a bad place. No matter how pissed off I might be at my family member, I would still get them out ASAP.

11. Bail Him Out
And give him a lift home making certain you have a word with your brother about it.

Don't let him think that he can get away with anything.

12. Spring him yourself or split it with your brother and sister-in-law
Either way I think your brother and sister-in-law should know about this.

14. We're gonna do it.
He has to pay us back, and he has to go straight home and call us immediately after he tells Dary and Siobahn.

Thanks for the advice, all.

17. P18, I gotta agree with you.......................

If he thinks he can skate responsibility, it will only hurt him later. Don't make him sweat it out too long, but I think he should call your brother (especially if he's your brother's responsibility)and take credit for what he did.

Just my $0.02

edit: horrible, horrible syntax.

20. He's sweated it enough, I think.
He was crying when he called, because he was scared to death. We told him that we expect a call befpre 11:00 tonight from home, and we'll talk to the family then, to confirm that he's told them what he's done.

I'm glad to hear he's OK. I don't imagine the County lockup is too friendly of a place. Glad he's having to fess up to your bro.

22. Padraigh, you get the bail back, minus fees, after his appearance. Bail's
contingent on a "promise to appear". You probably know that. Good luck, 'though.
