employment advice?
Ive been teaching HS for 10 years and I like it. However, I have been offered a job working for a pharmaceutical company - the salary almost triples, plus car, gas, and phone. I know big pharma is a big lobby and huge corporate supporter of Bush. I've been tempted by the $$$. Help.

1. Oh fuck it
I guess there is something to say for enjoying your job, but who's to say you won't enjoy this one?

I say go for it. If somebody were to pay me three times what I get now plus benefits I'd jump on it in a heart beat.

2. Take it!
It doesn't mean that you have to 'lose your soul' if you take the job. Heck, if you do it right, you can build a nice little 'nest-egg' for yourself and go back to teaching after awhile. The experience will probably make you an even better teacher because you'll be able to use and share the knowledge you gained in 'corporate-life' with your students.

3. Take it, contribute to NGOs that fight against draconian patent law
and for cheap, generic drugs for poor countries. But don't let them know!

5. It's A Good Job
And, if you can save up enough money to take care of your family until the bottom drops out of the market, you may want to take it.

It's strictly up to you to do what you think is right for you and your family in the long run.

I, as we all, have our opinions here....

6. What's wrong with being a positve force for change in a new venue?
If you feel like doing it, do it. Whatever "it" is.

7. My Neighbor Was A Drug Salesman
It's not easy to walk away from a quarter-of-a-million per year Sales Job in the late '70's.

More so now because the Drug Industry has a "lock" on the government and so much more money is involved.

8. If you are working at a job you like stay
I don't think there could be a bigger mistake than leaving a job you enjoy.

Sales jobs suck. I met a teacher last week who broke down during a meeting of sales agents while discussing how much she "loved" her new job. She really hates it, I can tell. She displaces her dislike by making snide remarks about her colleagues, talking about how much she liked teaching, and bitching about why she wasn't raised from the sales position to a supervisory position. I think sales suck especially for a teacher. Don't be fooled by the money, it's a downward move.

9. You pretty much have to bribe doctors to do the job
If you don't mind having to offer doctors some sort of "prize" to promote your bosses drug, good drug or not, then go for it. If it bothers you, it may not be the job for you.

11. Thanks
I have a week to decide, before I have to turn in my classroom keys and an unsigned contract - scary.

12. It's a big move
Now you know what we all would do, but it's really up to you. What's your gut feeling about it?

Let me tell you about one person you are asking advice from. I'm a college drop out turned truck driver. I've had two failed businesses in my time. Everything I've touched seems to turn to shit. I have a steady gig now making about 35k, but it's boring as hell. So you can see why someone in my position would jump at the offer you have gotten. So don't let anything I say make the determination. Just look into your heart and you will know the answer.
