I'm going to New Mexico in a few weeks and need advice.
My sister is taking me on a trip for my 40th birthday. Isn't she great! We are going to Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Taos. What are the "must do" things? Best places to eat, best places to buy good Indian jewelry and what foods are the best in these places. I'd like to see the cliff dwellings and the best scenic drives. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

3. Take the back road through the montains from Santa Fe to Taos.
You pass through a bunch of great little towns. Also take a trip up to the Jemez Mountains.

11. Yes, do...
The best thing you can do in New Mexico is stay off I-25 as much as possible and take back roads. The drive from Santa Fe to Taos goes through beautiful mountain country and high desert that really show you why this state is called the Land of Enchantment.

45 minutes west of Albuquerque on I40. It's spectacularly situated on an 800-foot high mesa and the views are unreal. One really gets a feeling of the Old Southwest up there, but I recommend going in the morning or early afternoon at the latest.

It's cooler then, of course, plus you'll be here during monsoon season and I would not want to be up on that mesa (or anywhere outdoors, for that matter) during one of our spectacular lightning storms.

6. Santa Fe-
Blue Corn Cafe, Atomic Cafe(ask for the fish tacos, thank me later)
and the Coyote cafe. Do the Ghost Tour, see the stairs that Jesus built, visit the galleries. Do the opera. Try the Lensic theatre.
Georgia O'Keefe museum, Native Art Museum, Governor's Square. Drive to the Ski Basin, drive to Los Alamos. (use lower gear) Bandolier.
Breathe the air. Have fun.

7. Just a few mentions...
In Albequerque we visited the old town square, right off of Route 66. It was great wandering around. We ate at one restaurant, either La Hacienda or La Placita, think it was La Placita. All is touristy, but we really liked the area alot. We had a great meal. The restaurant was on a corner, very, very old building, and the original Don had a staircase built to nowhere, supposedly for his daughter to come down at her wedding. Like I said, touristy, but a darn good meal.

In Taos, we made the drive up to Red River, and ate at Texas Red's. I think there is another one in San Marcos,TX, but not only was the food great, the location is awesome, up in the resort area, so worth the roadtrip in any event for the scenery and fresh air.

Santa Fe is an extremely nice town, you'll find good food just about anywhere. The town square is shopper's heaven. Go see the Miracle Staircase, it's a beautiful church as well, and just one of those things you should see just because you are there.

I love New Mexico.

13. Taos Pueblo...
is an amazing place to spend an afternoon. It's a traditional pueblo with extraordinary Native American architecture and there are often special events going on. The people there are very kind and hospitable and at the same time proud of their heritage; it's definitely more than a tourist trap.

One important thing about visiting Native areas--do NOT bring a camera. They're universally prohibited, and you'll see signs to that effect. Respect this and you'll be welcome. Otherwise...

Spend as much time as you can up north - Truchas, Taos, Red River.

On second thought, just take me along. I don't take up much space.
