Smartest dog you've ever met
I was walking somewhere and came to a traffic light. A German Shepherd came along beside me, sat down, glared at me, looked pointedly at the crosswalk button and kept glaring at me until I reached over and pressed it. Then he wagged his tail.

When the light changed he waited for the advance green to finish, then crossed when the crosswalk light came on.

2. I was in a small market in France
and I noticed the front door open slightly and close again. Then this little dog walks by me, picks up some packaged food and walks back towards the door. Again the door opened slightly.

3. That's pretty damn smart!
my new dog Tasha continues to amaze me. I've only had her 6 months (she's 2) and every day she does something that convinces me she could easily run the country better than Shrub (well that's not saying much I guess).

She's a Border Collie and she figures things out very quickly. I had to put her and her brother in the house one time so I could work in the yard without them getting in the way and she figured out how to open the French doors so they could get out.

She picks up on little clues too. Yesterday I wanted to get them to go outside so I went to the door and opened it. Boris went out but Tasha didn't. Then I realized she didn't go because I hadn't put my shoes on, so she knew I wasn't going to go out and play with them. She just sat in the doorway until I slipped on my sandals, then she ran out.

She also knows the names of her toys and for example, can pick out her "purple ball" from all the other toys.

I've often thought about getting her into films but I don't think she'd enjoy it as she's not fond of commotion.

9. Same IQ in a Golden Ret I had - level locks, push and slide doors,
French doors, House doors -

I once shut the doors to the Kitchen with him inside so I could leave knowing the house would not be disturbed for my guests that were due in 6 hours - came back later abd he was on Front porch with a shit eating grin on his face -

He had done the a 4 goal trick! - opened a house door via the round knob, opened a French door via round knob, opened a sliding glass door via a latch down and push to side (it was not safety locked as it was daytime), and opened a sliding screen via a lever.. Of Course it cost well over $200 to replace the wood work around those knobs and latches (and that cheap only because I used a wood puddy to rebuild the sides of the Kitchen door).

I could control him from 200 yards away - followed by hand pointing to see what I was pointing at - and would go in that direction (although if what I thought was a fun idea - like pick up a tree limb - did not meet his definition of fun at that moment - he was quite able to come 200 yards back and look at me as if to explain why it was a stupid idea. When at stud, he would look to make sure I noticed what a good job he was doing - again with that shit eating grin.

He actually had teaching sessions with other dogs. Taught a nice brown 6 month old dog how to pretend fight (the puppy had been abused and was scared of everything - indeed that dog still comes to the house looking for my now dead Golden - granted he always gets a treat when he comes over.

He'd tree cats (he'd slow down so the cat was not "caught" and take pleasure in slowing me his tree'd capture. At night he noticed I have poor night vision so he would play with my mind - I knew he was in the yard - but he would be still in the shaddows and I could not see him from where I was, and as I moved, he moved around the yard, never close enough for me to see. One night I really thought he was wandering down the street - and spent an hour in the car checking out all the streets - only to come home to that shit eating grin again.

He came into my life right after a Champ Golden that was not at all that smart died. That dog - both dogs - were wonderful with kids - took abuse and only made a face that said "why me lord!" but there was huge difference in smarts!

4. Smokey
was the smartest dog I have ever known. He thought he was a person. Among his amazing accomplishments, he was an excellent frisbee player, he could unlock, open and close our patio door, he knew many words and would distinguish between his toys, he would "make" the ideal throwing stick when we were out in the woods, and when you talked to him he had an amazing range of vocalizations.

He only lived for seven years and we have had several dogs since then, but none as smart. He was a Lab/Shepherd mix.

...instead of at the end of your finger. She's the only dog I've ever known who will do this. That must indicate SOME kind of abstract thought.

8. My FISH have me trained.. The koi in my pond... I put the food RIGHT
where they want to me, since, when they see me, they move to their spots and start mouthing.

Moby likes to eat in the open, the littler black and orange one likes to cover his eyes with the lily pad, for example... the others all have their SPOTS and I drop the food into their mouths.

Yeah, the dogs have me all trained too. Spoiled as they are.
