1. Great, ugly as sin and
half again as expensive. No wonder the Bush gang loves it.

2. Actually, it is probably more effective than the older models
If you want to be technical, there should be a different camoflage uniform for each different area in the world in order to be most effective. Hunters know this already.

This model will probably have a better overall effect than anything previously devised.

"Ready to go" philosophy

I have the feeling that this may have been pushed forward by Donald Rumsfeld's concept of a force that can deploy anywhere anytime. A one uniform fits all terrain concept fits well with this philosophy.

But like you, I have my doubts about it being effective. The Marine pattern seemed a lot better. They've apparantly put some structural improvements in the uniform including the use of more breathable fabric (probably micro-polyester blend) and reconfiguration for ease of use.

3. Absurd...more than 50% mark-up for a uniform, yet..
the sodliers in Iraq don't have enough bullets or body armour.

What the hell is that nero-jacket supposed to be? Looks like something from a bad sci-fi movie.

15. It replaces two separate uniforms!!!!

So it's an ultimate cost savings. But I'm personally unconvined about it's effectiveness. I'd have to see the guy standing in different terrains.

You know the old saying, jack of all trades, master of none.

Of course, we all know that researchers have created sophisticated fabrics with cromatophor type abilities. Basically, the army uniforms of the future will react to their environment and create custom camoflauge that will make the soldier literally dissappear in to the background.

19. Oh I'm sure there's all kinds of reasons for updating the uniform.
But at a time when I read countless articles about how ill-prepared and ill-outfitted our soldiers are who stand in the middle of a battlefield...well, I can't get too excited about what color pants they have on. Even if the super-duper camo helps save their lives by hiding them, what good is it if they don't even have enough bullets or water?

4. ugly
I wonder if the yearly clothing allowance for the soldiers will increase proportionately with the higher price of the new uniforms? Probably not.

8. No shine boots
"Soldiers also will get a new, no-shine, tan combat boot, and the current black boots will be discontinued."

That should make some soldiers happy.

23. Exactly my thoughts....
looks like when the military called up Hollywood to help them out
against the "terrorists" they forgot to leave out the imaginative
parts.

This uniform is ridiculous. Why the hell couldn't they have just
copied what the Marines came up with?

13. If they were serious, they'd make it out of this stuff
http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn?pagename=article&contentId=A36355-2002May30¬Found=true

Basically, it's spider silk that's been bio-engineered into goat's milk. The stuff is tough enough to catch bullets (the way the Mongol's silk shirts caught arrows and prevented internal lacerations).

I agree that the uniform is UGLY. And I'm not convined that it will be effective camoflauge in all three environments. The Marine new uniform looked a lot better and seemed more convincing.

The tan boots are positively ugly with the white/greenish pattern.

But if it's more comfortable and more effective, I suppose it's an improvement. Look for this uniform to be replaced soon however. The advent of carbon nano-tube fibers is on the horizon. Once that stuff becomes cheap enough, all the military uniforms will be made from it.

22. Symbolic of our move from jungle to desert
Looks like future "wars" will be all desert, all the time. Who needs jungle camo now? (Love the new "non-wrinkle" fabric! Eliminates the need for those weighty travel irons and steamers).

27. Ugly as hell, but probably more effective.
And I'm sure the troops are going to love the "no-shine" boots.

And looks aren't everything, anyway...the best-looking military uniform of the past century or so was the black and silver of the Nazi SS, after all.
