Leaving from SF on 3 day trip....where to go????? need advice
My sister - in - law has hit a wall, and gave me her 3 kids for 3 days. She needs to figure out what to do - where to go. Planes, Trains and automobiles are all options. She is nervous about going someplace alone - but I think it would be great for her! Her hubby is out of town for a few days.

I've given suggestions.....I would love to hear some from DUers.

WHERE SHOULD SHE GO???!!!

She's leaving in 2 HOURS!

3. I agree.
I went there one time just to get out of San Diego for a few days. It was perfect. I didn't have to know anyone there because there were so many people.

12. Oh, poor dear

Though if she's not the crowd type, I understand that.... I agree with the folks who have suggested a drive up or down the coast. Maybe the KOA in Mednocino? Or a delightful B&B somewhere?

14. I'm gonna have her check out your post.
That could work - she was talking about a balcony view of the ocean, but not Half Moon Bay or Santa Cruz. I brought up Bodega Bay too......your idea could be of interest

18. my spelling on yachets maybe be off a letter or two
If you have a map of Oregon....it is about 1/4 to half way, I think, of the way down from the top.....There are some other neat little towns in Oregon coast too...Lincoln, Newport there is a cute lighthouse there...I just took pictures.....

But even the coastline of calif up through the redwood forest is nice... Not sure how much driving she wants to do....could go up the main highway quicker and cut over to coast in Oregon by way of Eugene and then go up....

13. Drive to Tahoe.

Then she can turn north and to into Lassen country, or south. Depends on her mental/emotional state/needs.

I'd turn south from Tahoe, head to Mono Lake- an excellent place for meditation and such- and down the Owens Valley. Vegas becomes a possibility, but cutting back through Yosemite could get her back if time runs short.

15. Drive to Mendocino
Best to stay in Mendocino itself, but if that's too expensive you can get cheaper digs in Fort Bragg, or in a number of places along the coast. There are a lot of secluded beaches you can visit. It's lovely...

16. Many great B&Bs near Pt Reyes and
further up the coast. Great to just look at the ocean and think. I've been once or twice when I was fed up with the demands of a family.

If she likes the city, SF is just great to walk around in. Lots of great neighborhoods.

24. Go up to Klamath
thats where the trees of mystery are. They are Huge! Awesome, the place looks like jurassic park. Drive up i5 north, don't take the scenic route, it's too long and too pukey. Makes Muir Woods look like nothing.

26. Thanks for the advice
This is her sister-n-law saying thanks to everyone for the advice. I am still debating where to go. I am tempted to stay at home because I have never gone away by myself. I'm fine going to the movies alone but I don't know about Vegas, etc. I know I'm a wimp. Thanks again.

37. the first time alone is the hardest but the best....
not having your kids up you butt....is the first
not having anyone else to decide where to go or what to do...
not having your kids say get me this or that....

I go alone all the time...no arguments.... you meet other people... and you learn to trust your instincts and intuition.....and you find out you are a very trustworthy person.... if in doubt pray and then listen....you intuition...kicks in and you know.... good from bad...follow the nudges....
Hard to start out alone late in the day for the first time... head out first thing in the morning...and at least go over night somewhere....take a tent and go to a campground....just GO and have FUN

31. How about staying in town? So much to do!
The Ferry Building has a wonderful farmer's market, as well as great stores on non-market days.

She can take the ferry over to Sausalito and wander through the shops and sip coffee on the waterfront with a view of the city.

Is she into plants? Strybing Arboretum is amazing.

Coit Tower is always fun. Great view.

If she likes hiking, and seeing one of the most beautiful places where land and sea converge, she should visit Pt. Reyes, and stop in Pt. Reyes Station or Olema for lunch.

Hope she has a good time!
