2. Not teaching it in ANY form, that I can tell..
Years back, some educators decided to focus on "content" rather than structure..a very dumb move, in my opinion..Instead of correcting the kids and teaching them the proper way to write, they apparently did not want to "make them feel bad"..

When I was in school, every paper had 2 grades..one for content, and one for "construction"..

5. All of my students' papers
always have 2 grades; one for content, one for "mechanics."

I guess I missed the memo.

7. Good for you.. I am so glad to hear that some teachers
are still making the kids learn the lessons..:)

I even got notes from the teachers at times, with words spelled incorrectly.. THAT really bent me out of shape.. It took every bit of self control to not take out a red pencil and correct her errors when I returned the note, signed.:)

8. Agghh!
How embarassing. I probably would have done it. Just once.

I've never been tempted to correct a parent's communication, though. I just wish parent/adult education was a bigger priority for our nation. A year of listening to parents, and reading their notes, is an eye-opener. It points out the huge disparity between the haves and the have-nots. Children who grew up in homes hearing poor grammar and/or non-standard english every day don't ever really give it up. Teaching them standard english is like teaching them a second language; they can learn to use it, but most don't think in it.

It's an uphill battle, made steeper when entertainers make poor grammar "popular" among adults as well as kids.

3. Well, it seems we're always looking for more teachers, so
feel free to come on down and do a better job. We could use more folks like you with that "can do" attitude.

6. As a former foreign language teacher, I have to say that
it really depends on the school.

Every year, I asked my first-year students how many of them had had formal English grammar, and about half raised their hands.

The half who didn't raise their hands were the ones who said things like, "This is just for you and I" or "I was laying in bed when the earthquake struck" or "I haven't ever ate Japanese food."
