Dog question: Any formula for guessing a mutt's adult size
from size at about 4-5 months? Yes, the Havoc clan is considering a dog sibling for the 90 pound hound. He has been very sad since his old cat pal died and his dog friend up the street can't play much.

Anyway, we have been looking at sites for shelters in our area (that being a relative term, we live near nothing) and saw a pup who intrigues us. Several emails about him and it looks like we may make the trip to introduce him to the 90 pound hound and see if they might wanna be pals.

The pup was dropped off at a farm with his mother. The female is a schnauzer cross and the father is an unknown. Pup is 35 pounds (at 4-5 months of age) and is light golden beige with dark on muzzle and tip of tail. Rough coat, thick bones. From the photo, he looks to me like he may have some Anatolian shepherd in him, but can't say.

So, what's your pet formula for guestamating a dog's final size? I am trying to think back to when the 90 pound was that age and remember what his weight was. I know he was 82 pounds at 9 months but can't remember his weight at 4 months. Am I getting into another huge mutt? (not a deal breaker, as Havocdad wants some sort of mastiff when the 90 pound hound gets really old) but there is limited space on the bed! We thought maybe another dog would inspire the current K9 to sleep on the bed in the den....

1. Look at the paws.
Large breed puppies will have bigger paws.

Other than that, I don't really know a way

2. Paws look broad in the photo
Muzzle and eyes look like maybe a retirever. He looks solid. I have a good feeling about getting to meet him this weekend.

3. My pup was 35 lbs at 4-5 months
he's now about 65. He's a super mutt, so he never quite grew into his paws or his head, for that matter. Of course, the age is usually a guesstimate, too. The shelter told me he was 3 months and my vet guessed almost 5 months. Thankfully, the shelter was also wrong about him being part mastiff or I'd have one big boy on my hands. :-)

Good luck introducing the pups.

4. Thanks for the info!
Yeah, I am figuring he won't get as big as the Golden but get to around 65 pounds. That's good, don't want a tiny playmate for our big dog!

Am really getting excited about this. Think someone is guiding this for me, just have that 'it's supposed to be' feeling and I have good experiences when I follow that feeling!

If we adopt the little rascal, I will get some pictures posted to show him off with his new dog brother.
