Any R. Crumb fans on DU?
I posted a great Crumb poster earlier and got like two responses. This man was a genius. So, either I'm the only Crumb fan here, or you people can't stand me. WTF is it??? ;)

2. Sorry I missed your other Crumb post. I have a funny story.
I discovered the wonderful world of R. Crumb when I was in me tweens. My dad had a stack of 70s underground comix in his bedroom, and I would sneak them into my room and read them. You can't keep depraved sex, drug usage, and cartoons from a teenager, dammit!

I eventually got in trouble. Several times. ;)

4. How funny!
My dad was the same way. He eventually embraced the idea of sharing them with me. Check this out. You can order ALL of those old comix for a very reasonable price. http://www.ripoffpress.com/cgi-bin/loadpage.cgi?id+homepage.htm

3. Crumb is a Comic Genius
but I have a problem with a lot of his art, which comes off as incredibly misogynistic.

8. He just liked big women.
I didn't think the art was misogynistic at all.

17. It was misogynistic if you believe that there's more to women
than being sex bimbos.
But that was the only way women got represented at all (or as mothers). Not a whole lot different now.

But I've got a dilemma, because I love his work anyway; yet it pisses me off.

I think it's tough for men, or white straight men anyway, to really get what it feels like to constantly be confronted with insulting/trivializing imagery or attitudes, and have them so embedded in the culture that even pointing them out gets you yelled at for being a crabby bitch or laughed at for being trivial.

5. I've liked Crumb since 1971. I got turned onto his comix in a Head Shop
called the Freedom Shop in Southampton, Long Island, of all places. I looked at Fritz the Cat and his other characters. I loved the drawings and wit. My parents of course thought just reading Crumb would make you smoke dope and become a hippie. I went into NYC to see the documentary about Crumb about 10 years ago. I wish I had bought the soundtrack to it when I had the chance. The only thing I have is a compilation of his comix. I wish I had a Life and Times of Phoebe Zeitgeist by Michael O'Donohue to go with it.

And it's one of my favorites.

Crumb fans will love the Harvey Pekar bioflick, American Splendor.

I'll have to check it out! I think a lot of those head comix would make great avatars.

floating around about Robert Crumb. He came from a VERY strange family. One of his brothers killed himself about eight years ago. I just picked up a copy of Fritz the Cat on DVD. Pretty good master.

19. The Crumb film was made by Terry Zwigoff
a starving filmaker and cello player in R.Crumb's band, "The Cheap Suit Serenaders". Terry Zwigoff went on to direct the box office hit, "Bad Santa" staring Billy Bob Thornton.

14. Big fan of "The Cheap Suit Serenaders"
Funky, but fun band. I think Crumb's music world is very much overlooked because of his art work.

20. LPs? LPs!
I have a CSS record that was recorded 78 rpm on Crumb's insistence (possibly the last 78 pressed in America)! Only a true Luddite is set up for that oversized stylus and can appreciate the questionable fidelity of a 78 record.

as a person after watching that documentary about him...isn't it called "Crumb"?
