1. I'm in favor of polyphony generally

...although about the late 16th century polyphonic excesses caused a great deal of concern in the church. You might say the composers of that time were on a polyphonic spree. Hence the evolution of the Florentine Camerata and their new style of music, or nuove musiche, which was in contrast quite declamatory in style.

One suspects this is not the polyphonic spree to which you refer, however.
