Age, Music, Past time? Indulge me!
I'm relatively new around here, so forgive me if theres been a million of these sorts of threads before, but I was just kinda curious as to what ya'lls backgrounds are like. Specifically how old everyone is, what kind of music gets you off, and what you do to find solace in the world. Please...give as much or as little detail as you wish! :headbang:

Myself, I'm 23 years old. Music, politics, film, literature, art...are just about the only things in this world that keep me sane.

I'm currently soaking up some Brad Mehldau, who in my opinion is easily the best modern jazz musician. Absolutely wonderful stuff. I'd say my favorite bands though would be the Flaming Lips, Modest Mouse, Radiohead, Yo La Tengo, Wilco, Rilo Kiley, Phish (used to tour in my highschool days, not so much now).

Also I run a website, a streaming radio-station for a great young band out of Philadelphia called Brothers Past. They are an absolutely amazing blend of indie/electronica styles and put on a truly mindblowing live show. Give the radio a listen sometime if you're bored! http://www.bpradio.net

Anyway, I'm just bored on a wednesday night and quickly falling in love with the Democratic Underground forums. Thanks ya'll for being so great! :yourock:

1. I'm 31
I listen to heavy metal and new rock although it doesn't really trip my trigger like it used to. But every once in a while a new song will come out that has me wading through all the crap they play on the radio just to hear it. I was getting into jazz there a little bit not too long ago, but there's no station locally that plays good jazz, just that smooth jazz crap. The only thing I do for solace is hang out here in the lounge on DU and drink beer. I wish I could say that the arts interested me or that I had a great lover or a family, but I don't so I have to just be cool with my brewskies and you all.

Welcome to DU, MirrorAshes! Here's to ya! :toast:

2. sounds good to me!!!
thanks for the welcome, and check out Brad Mehldau, I think you'll enjoy it! Its classic, but has an edge too. I've not been so enamored with a jazz musician since I first explored Miles Davis and John Coltrane :)

3. Kicking for the cool new girl/guy!
HiYa MirrorAshes! A belated welcome to DU! :hi:

Age: Ew...Ok...I have 2 decades on you.
Music: I'm a bit out of the demographic for 'popular' music. I think the Talking Heads have stood the test of time. :headbang: Amy Lee of Evanescence is a great vocalist, imho. The current object of my jazz affection is a guy named Vince Jones (obscure).

Past time: DU, spending time with my husband, gardening, travel, art history, reading, thinking - just living life is an interesting experience!

Have a great time here at DU! :kick:

5. Yo. Yo yo.
46 years old. Dagnabbit.

Unemployed for now. Writing a book or three, and doing programming. I'm also starting a document automation company. OK, I'm hiring myself out as a specialized document prep and pre-press guy.

Music -- I was Twee before any of the Twee musicians were born. I romanced their mothers and suckled their issue at my metaphysical breast. I am the Primal Patriarch of high-energy, immature, occasionally whiny music. Because deep down inside, we're all high-energy, immature, and occasionally whiny.

I like the pop music from the 1960s, especially pre-Invasion music. Which means Bobby Vee, April Stevens, the Four Preps, and a bunch of other acts that Rolling Stone hates. So much the better.

I live in/near Philly, too. Ever hear of The Impossible Years, Nixon's Head, Separate Checks, Lauren Hart, the Wishniaks? Damn fine bands and musicians. All the bands are gone, but most of the guys are around, and Lauren Hart has been a solo act since she was knee high to Mario Lemieux.

9. The short answer
Because it's late...

Age: 38

Music: Bowie, U2, Peter Gabriel, Peter Murphy, Loreena McKennitt, Dead Can Dance, Enigma are my classic favorites.

Newer bands I like include Evanescence, Nickelback, Kenny Wayne Shepperd, The Devlins, Raul Malo... well, there's lots more.

Past-times: Politics (mais oui), writing and recording music, wine tasting, reading, travel, movies. Hmmm, the usual suspects. :-)

I live in Philly, maybe I can come see your band sometime.

12. I'm older than dirt...
but stuck at 22, which seems to me to be just about the perfect age for a guy. Music, as you might expect, anything from the 60's, early 70's. I think the Beatles are God. Ditto for Simon and Garfunkel. I also love classical music and new age stuff, especially Enya and Loreena McKennett. I read everything I can get my hands on. Love science fiction and fantasy. My next book to read will be Stephen King's "The Song of Susannah," Volume VI of the Gunslinger series. I'm a gay Vietnam veteran, a Virgo (which probably helps explain my reclusive nature), and a lifelong Democrat of the extreme liberal/socialist persuasion. I find solace in nature, movies, travel, my enormous and wonderful extended family, and my job, from which I derive a great deal of satisfaction. I don't ever plan on retiring. Even if I suddenly became very wealthy, I'd still find something to occupy my time and provide some structure for my life. Thanks for asking - I hope this answer hasn't been TOO long. Congratulations on being a fresh and vibrant young Democrat - there's no better thing in all the universe to be!

13. I'm a lady *of a certain age*
;)

Eh, what the hell...I'm 37, but I act about 14. And not so much a lady, either. :D

I've kinda given up on *rawk* or guitar-based music for several years (with the exceptions of the classics of my generation; Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, Pixies, etc). I worked in the music biz from age 16 to 32 and thus had access to far too many shows and now that kind of music rather makes me :boring: Too much of a good thing, I s'pose. ;)

Anyway, these days I'm pretty hardcore into Techno (Jeff Mills, Thomas Krome, Thomas Heckmann, Chris Liebing, etc.), House (Derrick Carter is tha man! :D), electro (have you heard the new Prodigy single? It's smashing! Yeah, I never thought I'd be saying that either, but it's really 'ol' skool electro ala Afrika Bambaataa or something...very cool!). Other than electronic stuff I'm still loving TV on the Radio and M83 even though they're not that new anymore. It sounds like I might dig the band you play, I'll definitely give it a listen!

Also, I'm far too interested in politics for my own good. It's gonna make me a mental patient before it's all said and done. :silly:

Sounds like you'll fit in just fine around here. :) Welcome! :hi: :toast:

14. awesome!!
I'm also a huge fan of SY, MBV, Pixies, TV On the Radio, and M83! I think Brothers Past would be very appealing to you.

I'll have to check out some of the techno you mentioned, I'm more into d&b like Ed Rush & Optical, Big Bud, Kruder & Dorfmeister, but also some house ala Kevin Yost, Josh Wink, Marc Farina...all great stuff.

I hear you about the mental patient thing, sometimes I wonder if I'm gonna make it to november without cracking, heh.

Thanks for the warm welcome, check out the radio sometime! :yourock:
