Okay. So the movie thread with the same theme got me going. Let's do music.

My pick: Oasis. They're not at all my favorite group (far from it), but I do like them a lot, at least their mid-90s stuff. Okay - so they're derivative, but IMO their music is undeniably good (at least pre-1997). Their first two albums and their B-sides are some of the best music of the '90s. No, it's nothing groundbreaking, but it's just extremely melodic and fun. That's all I ask from them. And yes, the Gallaghers are assholes. Who cares?

3. Lee Andrews & The Hearts

A 50s doo-wop group that was popular in the east, but almost unheard of west of the Mississippi. One of their biggest songs was called "Long Lonely Nights". Don't know if it's available on Mp3, but their harmonies were awesome.

Paul Westerberg from the Replacements has such an incredible voice and is practically unknown outside of the 'Mats crowd.

Juice Newton - But I only know her "Playing With the Queen of Hearts" song. I sometimes do restaurant work as a magician/balloon twister, and I like to force that card on people so I can see if they're willing to sing that song after I "mess up" several times in finding their card before I reveal it in an amusing way.

Indigo Girls - Kind of a big deal being a white straight male from Kansas/Oklahoma and liking them. I didn't know who they were when I first heard them, and it didn't matter after I found out.

Selena - At least amongst my non-Latin friends. :)

Not too many people like grindcore bands (Anal Cunt, Fuck I'm Dead, Combat Wounded Veteran) or noise bands (Wolf Eyes, Black Dice). I used to use them to get people to leave my dorm room.

People seem to dislike minimalism a lot, too.

Now a lot of Tom Waits stuff I don't dig, but "Martha" is breathtaking, and "Downtown Train" is nice.

And I've been hearing the Gin Blossoms song "Hey Jealousy" on the radio station I listen to, and have developed a strong affection for it, despite not caring for it when it came out.

...I certainly wouldn't be calling his music tastes bad. Those are all great (though I'm not familiar with midnight oil and the cruel sea). Frankly, I don't know anybody who doesn't like the smiths, the cure, coldplay, or pink floyd. I mean, they may be unfamiliar with them, but nobody I know who knows of them dislikes them.

People give them a lot more shit than before. Practically nobody below the age of 20 (exc. me I guess) remembers them and while I've gotten some positive responses from people if I've mentioned them, tons of others have been like "oasis is shit", stuff like that. I've only met maybe one other person who likes them. But maybe I'm wrong. I hope so.

Picked up his first (and undoubtedly only) album in a cutout bin prolly 1970. Goofy looking fuck with a lit bowtie as I recall.

Sickly sweet, like Paul Williams doing a Carole King impression.

I like it a LOT.

Oh, and Willis Alan Ramsey, despite his having written "Muskrat Love" which, BTW, sounds much better in the original Texan.
