Can an allergic reaction cause chilling?
Something really started bothering me when I was working in the yard this evening. Itching and burning around nose and mouth, itching all over my hide, but especially on my face and scalp and now I am chilling something fierce. Odd for me as I am generally warm?

Took some antihistamine and it helped the itching a bit, but the chilling is worse and my head is pounding.

Whadda ya suggest?

1. Did you get dehydrated as well?
Sounds a bit like mild sun stroke. Did you get sun burnt?
Take a little salt and water to retain the water. If not better rehydrated, call doctor.

3. Not sun, heat or dehydration. Was in the shade, it was not hot
and I am probably one of the few people in America sho drinks enough water. Mouth and nose almost feel like some chemical burn, like when you use strong clearners and your hands burn. Itching is really bad.

Have had heat exhustion and sun stroke. this is nothing like that, except that I cannot get warm now as happened when got too much heat.

No, I don't do sun at all. And was not working hard, just planting some flowers in the shade.

2. Hives, Shortness of Breath?

Underside of your tongue or lips swelling?
In any case, you could be having a systemic allergic reaction to something.
They can be suddenly life threatening.
Are you with someone who can either keep an eye on you or drive you to a care facility? You should be.

Were you working with chemicals in the yard? Burning Poison Ivy?

I think a call to your local dial a nurse, or urgent care center would be in order!

4. Not home alone. Husband here. No bad breathing or anything like that
and no medical help to contact. Live in a REALLY small town in the middle of nowhere.

Wasn't working with any chemicals. Just my usual front lawn, same ol dirt as always. Do think there were some itty bitty flying bugs. Was wondering about reaction from some bites, but the burning around nose and mouth reaaly seems odd for that. Just wondered if the anybody else chills with an allergic reaction, as this is odd for me.

6. I asked Mr. DTBK, who is a psychiatrist
He said to check your temperature and heart rate. If you have a fever, you could have some sort of infection. He said normally chills mean a fever, not an allergic reaction.

10. My source of concern--
Chills can be a symptom of shock, as blood starts pooling in the abdomen. Severe allergic reactions cause shock. Were she going into shock at the time of the original posting, she would quite possibly be dead by now.

I am not a doctor, nor am I making a diagnosis.
I did, however, work in a Level I ER for 4.5 years.

I was simply concerned that nothing in the original
post ruled out a condition that can kill in as little as 15 minutes from onset of severe symptoms.

I do agree that the further description is far less sinister than the original one. If you have seen anaphylaxis progress, you might understand my concern.

As a further thought, if she does not have a cold tomorrow, she should still consider getting an epi pen for the home med kit, if this turns out to be an allergic reaction gone mildly systemic. Benedryl is a good thing to have as well.

5. Can be life-threatening... if accompanied by
signs of shock, such as

pallor (pale, white skin)
mental confusion
sweating
cool skin
blanched fingers
delayed capilliary nailbed refill (squeeze one finger nail, let it go, if it does not pink up immediately, this indicates the body is shifting blood to vital organs from extremities)
dizziness

find out what you are facing first, this could be very, very serious. I would take more of the antihistimine if I were you. You probably took 25mg of Benadryl... at least 50mg is a theraputic dose for possible allergic reaction. If that 50mg does not work, try another 50mg, and then call a health care provider.

7. No signs of shock at all
Don't feel good, but not shocky. Pulse & breathing fine. Nailbeds nice and rosey. Just headache, itching like hell again and freezing cold. Burning feelign around mouth and nose is letting up.

think you are right about more benadryl. Think I will do that and go to bed. I am friggin cold and that is so wierd.

And to DTBK, no fever but thank your husband for me. No node swelling either.

Thanks everybody. Just worried about being so damned cold and covered with goose bumps with this. I know we have West Nile in the area so if I feel lousy still when I wake up, I will see if I can get to medical care. (You have no idea what a long drive that is!)

8. I was wondering about Lyme disease, too
But I don't know the incubation period or symptoms for that.

9. We have ticks, but I think that bug leaves some sort of 'bulls eye' rash
at bite site. Haven't noticed that. Ticks here more likely to have Rocky Mt spotted fever and I know zilch about that.

12. Way too early, that starts a while after exposure, which the first
sign is a rash. Then flu, sometimes.

11. I get hives frequently and sometimes I get chilled too
It does sound like an allergic reaction. If it doesn't let up soon, you really should be seen by a doctor. Good luck!:hi:
