1. Get a file-recovery utility
Norton Utilities is the best known; there are also free utilities that work well. Read some reviews and download the one that gets the most raves.

Recovering lost files isn't guaranteed to be perfect, but if you don't write any files to your D drive, you should get most, if not all, of the files back.

3. Aren't they in the recycle bin?
Do you use Windows XP? It won't bring back data files, but if you've changed your system - i.e., program files you can do a system restore.

5. Were they custom icons?
Edited on Thu Jun-17-04 12:03 AM by BattyDem
If so, you probably deleted them and they'll be in the Recycle Bin .. but you should still be seeing some sort of generic icon. If you can't see any icons at all, try downloading TweakUI from http://www.microsoft.com (type TweakUI in the search box and get the appropriate version for your operating system ... assuming you're using Windows.)

After installing TweakUI, click on the "Repair" section and choose "Rebuild Icons" - not sure if it will help but it's worth a shot. :-)

Annoyances.org (a great windows help site) has some info on TweakUI if you want to know more about it. There are also direct links to each version (Win XP or Win 95/98/ME/2000) - it's easier than searching the Microsoft site. ;-)
Annoyances.org - Download TweakUI

On Edit: Do you mean you can't see the icons on your Desktop or you can't see them anywhere? (Explorer, My Computer, etc.)
