What's the most mediocre/average CD/record in your collection?
I'm not talking about THE WORST, or the best....I'm talking about that one CD that sits on your shelf, then you play it, and then you put it back on your shelf again.

The one that you barely leaves an impression on you, but you don't throw it away or sell it because it's "okay."

The one that you never play at parties, never play alone after a breakup and have a good cry, the never play to get pumped up.

The one that just barely exists. Which one is it for you?

For me, it's "A Small Circle of Friends: A Tribute to the Germs," a various artists CD that I have never played all the way through more than once, that I own simply because it has one pretty good song by a band I like on it. I don't think this Cd has ever been in my Discman.

2. Hooverphonic "Blue Wonder Powder Milk"
So-so Scandinavian electronica. I bought it for the song "Renaissance Affair" that was used in a VW commercial a few years back. I thought the rest of the album would sound somewhat similar. It's just...okay. It's not terrible, but it isn't very good either.

She, Alanis Morrissette, and Lisa Loeb form a trifecta of pretentious girl acousti-rock bullshit.

9. It's called "gyno-rock."
And it's awful.

Women have been in great bands, and there are fantastic women songwriters. Those three are not them.

gyno-rock?!

sorry, I know this is off the question, must be the Sangria talking :)

As one who may have been accused of that in the past ( several all female or mostly female bands to my credit), I sort of resemble that remark. ;)

Well one of the best unsung female bands was Scrawl. They could really rock.

There are worse things than Liz, though. You should hear her really early stuff ( well knowing you guys you probably have). Alanis is not my cup of tea, but she has grown on me a bit. Do you include Tori in that as well?

Raises the question of what female rockers would not merit that sorry designation. COme on what have you got? (teasing, slightly)

Yoko
Joan Jett
Chrissie
Riot grrrls of various description
S-K ( they are okay, but my reaction was been there, done that.)

37. Well, here's a partial list of performers/artists
who, I feel, do NOT fall under the "gyno-rock" tag.

Glass Eye/K. McCarty
Sleater-Kinney
Team Dresch
Kleenex
Sandy Denny/Fotheringay
Mellow Candle
Judy Henske
Sylvia Juncosa
Barbara Manning
The Bellrays
Heavens to Betsy
Melt Banana
Excuse 17
The Red Aunts
Neko Case/New Pornographers
Nina Simone
Sue Garner/Fish and Roses/The Shams
The Shaggs
Forget Cassettes
Laura Nyro

All of the above, and I'm forgetting/excluding hundreds more, do not fit into the dreaded "Whiny/Droning/Diary Entry/etc." female stereotype rock category. Beleive me, I'm not trying to be sexist here. I've been in several all-female (except me) bands before.

38. didn't think you were
thanks for more band names I am not familiar with... I forgot about Barbara Manning. An old bandmate of mine was really into her. This guy has been in a few "all women but him bands, too." Cool.

The Shaggs, well, that is another discussion, assuming you are talking about the My Pal Foot Foot ones. But remember, some good music comes out of dreams and diary entries, too. Certainly I have written a few of those myself! Some were good, but I agree that female (and male, too) " psychic openness" does not always make for great music, either.

:)

7. U2's "All That You Can't Leave Behind"
I got it soon after it came out, and it's not a bad album, but I just don't understand when people say it's best album of their career. I think "The Joshua Tree", "Achtung Baby" and "Zooropa" are VASTLY superior, and those get played a lot.

I mean, if someone else would put it on, I'd enjoy probably enjoy hearing some of the songs again. But I almost never choose to listen to it on my own.

So much talent, so few good songs.

Actually, I got rid of it years ago, but I just wanted to bring them up. They were one of those bands that should've been so much better than they actually were.

21. Vernon Reid was great with Ronald Shannon Jackson...
and solo. And they were all great musicians. And they had a handful of good tunes. But then they decided they wanted to be "difficult" and just released a barrage of unlistenable shit with no melody and popping basslines.

Truly a case of "All dressed up and no place to go."

And I concur about the Body Glove thing. At least they weren't into BUM Equipment.....

I would've surely said Urge Overkill 'Saturation'. I was even contemplating trading or selling it, but thought I'd give it one last listen just to be sure.

So anyway, now I don't know. Maybe Weezer's 2nd album...?

30. Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros "Streetcore".............
Edited on Thu Jun-17-04 05:46 PM by foamdad
You can tell it was mostly a posthumous effort. It lacks the fire of "Rock Art and the X-Ray Style" and "Global A-Go-Go." And Joe's cover of "Redemption Song" is just horrible.

edit: why did my post end up here?

35. Pearl Jam's Vitalogy
Listen I like Ten a lot but Vitalogy is just blah.

Its not blah enough to flush down the toilet mind you but its in a box somewhere its just soooo mediocre, bland ...

Almost put down Muse's Absolution which on a 1 to 10 would be a 7 but I still wonder if I will ever listen to that CD from start to finish. The thing is completely dense and put together as a concept album and just hard to listen to. Still, some of the songs are incredible and the lyrics are good and the singing is on target. Rough album because you want to like but find it so hard.

I own it too. There are a couple decent songs, but overall? :boring:

Maybe when I get around to making a mix CD of Pearl Jam, I'll include the good songs from Vitalogy, and trade the CD on something else.
