This is a pretty amazing place regarding gay people and homosexuality.
Edited on Thu Jun-17-04 01:46 PM by terrya
Look at what is going on today. m-jean came out...and nothing but unqualified support and friendship. I feel perfectly comfortable talking to you guys about being gay...and Doug, my man. :-)

This is something. I mean, I know all of you and like you. But I haven't met any of you in person. Yet. :-) I only know you in the mists of cyberspace.

Honestly...what about that gay man or lesbian at Free Republic, for example? Would he or she feel as comfortable talking about themselves as we do here?

There may be confusion for some of you about homosexuality or some gay issues. But there's never been anything less than simply not understanding something. I haven't seen one hint, one iota of homophobia at Democratic Underground. Granted, this is enforced by the rules mandating respect based on race, gender, sexual orientation. But it's more than that.

When I was a moderator, and I don't remember the context, I mentioned how Democratic Underground was gay friendly. EarlG took that as a compliment. He seemed somewhat surprised. He shouldn't be. DU IS a good, accepting place for gay people. It feels like a second home. :-)

Thanks, you guys.

Terry

2. Big hetero smoochies for all you guys!
Being a human being is hard enough. I have nothing but respect for anyone who would come out and live their life honestly in today's climate for religious based hate and intolerance.

You're just lonely, that's all. Where did I go wrong? It's all that SOFTBALL we let you play in high school! How could I have been so foolish? This is your FATHER's fault! His side of the family was always a little disturbed. How could you do this to me? WHAT will we tell our friends?

Your grandmother is going to have a stroke when she finds out! And I wanted GRANDCHILDREN!! I was looking forward to planning your WEDDING! You're just doing this to be spiteful! Why do you hate me so?! Do you have a "LOVER" a "GIRLFRIEND"? Who's the "husband" and who's the "wife"? She's not coming in my house at christmas!!

9. I am not supportive of Homosexuals! I am
jealous!

:)

Seriously, I was raised with Gay relatives (I am 40, and live in the South...so, my family is very cool on this issue)...in fact, I have never thought of being Gay as a lifestyle "choice" (in fact, I think that is stupid...how do you "choose" who you fall in love with?) or as an "alternative." I grew up thinking it was normal; I still do.

11. This is why our philosophy is superior.
I mean, I'm a fiscal conservative, but I'm a social liberal. Whenever those conflict, I err on the side of social liberalism. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING is going to be solved as long as hate, suspicion and oppression rule the day. As soon as the Republican party embraces gays, blacks, women, Jews, Muslims, the handicapped and the poor, and ALL HUMANS, I am registering Republican, simply for the fiscal policy. But As long as ALL their policies (including fiscal policies) discriminate unfairly against those who are "different," they have absolutely no moral authority to even come to the table to debate, much less govern.

Also, fags taught me about hair product. I've never looked so fabulous. So there's always that.

15. I have to agree
But let's face it, liberals by definition tend towards inclusiveness.

ps - Has anyone come up with a good, workable slang-ish term for bisexuals? I hate using the word "bi". I'm not sure exactly why, but it always sounds non-euphonious to me.

20. How about what Dennis Miller called them?
Back when he was funny, Miller did a Rant about the Bisexuals.

(Paraphrasing because I loaned out the book and it never came back:)

"Now, I'm a confirmed heterosexual, but I don't mind the homosexuals... but I think we can all agree that the bisexuals are a bunch of greedy motherfuckers. Get off the fence, and pick a hole!"

Ok, let me think. Hmmm, oh! I know. What exactly does it look like inside the infamous closet? If you can remember. I imagine it's nicely decorated (or is that a stereotype?).

29. Glad you asked!
"The Closet" hmmmmmm?

Some closets are shabby and not inviting, thus the homosexual quickly exits it.

BUT many closets are well stocked and comfortable and the homosexual stays in.

Off topic, saw show on TV about homes of the rich and famous, and you should see Tom Cruise's house. You could LIVE in the closet.

Not that it has anything to do with the topic at hand. Oh nooooooooooooo!

17. I could never see hating
anyone because they were gay...It's nought to me who anyone loves or is attracted to or marries or anything. Same for race, religion, etc (with the obvious exception of religion or religious types that try to push their beliefs on me...my fist, your nose and all...) I honestly can't even begin to understand how that mindset works.

Now, having said that...If you're gay or lesbian or black or Latino or Asian or Christian or Catholic or Muslim or Jew and also an ASSHOLE...well, then we have a problem. :D

30. The title of your thread is sad, in a way.
It's sad that a bunch of people supporting a friend and not being freaked out by a "coming out" announcement is out of the norm or would be classified by anyone as "amazing."

Unfortunately, you're probably right. And that's what's sad.

31. Of course it is!
Why would anyone care about anyone else's sexual orientation?

I can think of a million reasons why I might not be accepting of someone, and sexual orientation doesn't make that list.

People are who they are, and I'm not about to omit someone from my life because they love differently than I do.
