Poll question: Best 'transition period' Beatles album?
It's sobering to think that they had released Help!, Rubber Soul and Revolver in less than a year--such a feverish rate of expansion in a short time--few bands expand so much over their entire careers; let alone in three albums; let alone in one year. Some serious concurrences exist from Dylan and Brian Wilson, but it's still damned impressive.

2. I'm not so sure myself (though I picked Revolver)

The high points on Revolver are better than Rubber Soul, but I think Rubber Soul is more consistent. Harrison's two songs that aren't 'Taxman' never did much for me, and 'Doctor Robert' is pretty dull. The guitar tone and the rest of the songs on Revolver are incredibly brilliant, though. I can't believe John described 'And Your Bird Can Sing' as 'a horror', it has always been one of my favorite Lennon songs.

4. Hell, "Rubber Soul" is the best Beatles album PERIOD.
"Transitional" or otherwise.

5. One of the indications of a truly great band

Is that there is no general consensus on what their best album is. You like the 'we've discovered pot' album, I tend more toward the 'we've discovered LSD' album. :) After '66, the Beatles go nowhere but down in my estimation--still some pretty incredible stuff in there, though.

(Actually I think I like A Hard Day's Night best right now, but ask me tomorrow and we'll see where I'm at.)

6. I think Revolver is an incredible Lennon album.
Okay, other than "Doctor Robert." I'm with you there. But "And Your Bird Can Sing," "She Said, She Said," "Tomorrow Never Knows," "I'm only Sleeping" -- all some of the best songs he ever wrote.

I also like the George songs.

Now on to McCartney. I think Revolver was the first record that demonstrated that Paul could suck. "Fon No One?" Good song. "Eleanor Rigby?" "Got to Get You into My Life?" Eh. "YELLOW FUCKING SUBMARINE?" :puke:

(yes, Paul wrote YS, and gave it to Ringo when he realized it was even too stupid for him to sing)

It's the consistency you mention that brings me back to Rubber Soul. It doesn't match Revolver's heights; but the worst song on RS (probably "Michelle," IMO) is leagues better than YELLOW FUCKING SUBMARINE. :puke:

7. Lennon runs that show, no doubt about it
Now get over to the 'create a fifteen-track CD mix' thread so I can coldbloodedly analyze your choices and thereby identify the limitations of your taste and the defects of your personality.

10. Revolver
partly for personal reasons.
My parents gave it to me on my 10th birthday right when it came out.
It was the first Beatles album I owned.
I've still got the original Capitol vinyl at home.

11. Was it the bastardized US version?
I can't imagine the album without 'And Your Bird Can Sing', 'I'm Only Sleeping', etc.
