Very Simple PC LAN Question from a Very Simple Guy

Going to attempt to LAN two PC's (both running Windows XP Office) this evening. Both PC's will be in the same room.

Question: Can I simply use the appropriate cable to connect the computer's or do I need an actual hub (I've been told I need a hub, but I thought that was only for three or more PC's)

1. I believe a 'crossover' cable between the PCs will do it..

it's a certain wiring pattern...could look it up

just get a crossover cable and plug it in

3. But remember with the crossover cable

you'll need a switcher. I have one by D-Link and I just plug the switcher into each NIC card. Simple as pie.

4. Do you have a router?

If you do you can just share the files on the network.
