Juneteenth is a holiday of sorts in my family. We have always made it a priority to trace the roots of my family (on my mother's side) and we have verified our geneology back to about 1750 thus far. We even have early photographs of some relatives who made it into freedom. I have a great photograph of my great-great-great aunt Mary Brown who was 18 years of age at Emancipation. She had her hand cut off for trying to run away multiple times. I had a copy in my locker while I was an undergrad to remind me that, no matter how bad my day was going, she had worse ones.
Juneteenth marks Texas' ending slavery TWO YEARS after Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. It was one of, if not the very, last place slavery fell.
