6. Isn't "B--l B--kn-r" considered profanity?
at least anywhere north and east of NYC? Could you alert on that for foul language in the title? (well, not really, but...)

5. Until fifteen minutes after the end of the world
or the Sox win a Series to make up for that colossal choke...

...whichever comes first.

4. As a Met fan....
I enjoy this picture. My son got an autographed original for me with Buckner and Wilsons signatures for Fathers Day last year.

8. Yep, heard it a few times.
Poor Buck. I mean, it was funny, but you New Englanders gotta let it go. You actually made him move! For a game!

9. I remember a joke I heard in NYC
Right after that series ended.

Q: What do Bill Buckner and Michael Jackson have in common?

A: They both wear a glove for no reason.

10. My grandma was a huge Buckner fan...

...when he was a Cub. By her reckoning, if they left the Cubs, they were damaged goods. I tried to argue this wasn't always their choice and that Cubs' management hasn't exactly been known for holding on to good talent. No dice.

When he committed the error, Grandma said that wouldn't have happened had he still been in a Chicago uniform. He and the Sox were paying for the betrayal.

One could argue with that logic, but why bother. :-)

In any case, Buckner has taken too much heat for this. Yeah, he screwed up, just like countless players for the Sox have screwed up over the years. He's not the *only* reason the Sox didn't win, and neither is that Cubs fan the *only* reason the Cubs didn't win. Me'thinks the Mets and the Marlins had something to do with it.

11. I concur with that last statement
As a lifelong Mets fan I do consider Buckner an honorary Met. But what most people don't remember is that it was only game 6 of the WS and the boot by Buckner only allowed the game to be tied. So the way I see it, the Sox did have an opportunity to win (but I will admit that misplay did seem to take the wind from their sails). The 86 Mets were just an awesome team!

15. Your Grandma was right
It never would have happend if Buckner was still a Cub. The Cubs never would have made it to the WS. Losers. (I'm a frustrated White Sox fan).

14. I interviewed him in April 1986
In the Boston dugout at Tiger Stadium.
1986 is, of course, the year the ball skipped through his wickets.
The conversation itself was the typical sportswriter/athlete chatter -- I don't really remember much of it, but I DO recall that he chewed a combination of bubble gum and chewing tobacco. Pink with brown flecks -- and an aroma that would knock a buzzard off a shit wagon. Also, he'd spit occasionally (you probably wouldn't want to swallow any of that stuff).
John
If you want to make William Pitt do a cyber-scream, drop Buckner's name into the middle of a post. I guess some people never get over their childhood traumas.
It is now exactly twelve hours to FUNDAY.

17. Some things cannot be undone, unfortunately...
As I recall, Buckner was playing on a very bad ankle at the time and couldn't react quickly enough to stop the ball. I was watching the game and was just screaming at the TV, but obviously to no avail. I have always felt badly for him, especially as the Sox ended up losing a series they should have won.
