Couldn't relate to them until I was in my late 30s. Now I love Johnny Rotten.

7. Yes! Something I'll never forget tho!

Hearing a description of this new "shocking" music that denigrated the Queen of England! I remember thinking, "Why would anyone like that?!!!"

GOD BLESS THE QUEEN
SHE AIN'T NO HUMAN BEING

22. That's "God SAVE the Queen"!
First performed live on a boat that was floating down the Thames river while the Queen's 25th anniversary party was in progress

The song was #1 in England, but since it was banned by the BBC, they had to leave a blank spot at the top of the charts "officially".

8. I scared my Mom
I saw them (on TV) for the first time when I was about 8 or so and loved them! Just so you understand, I grew up in a very small (pop. 1100 not including cattle) town in So. IL. Being able to hear, see or even read about them was hard to do. I have been a rocker ever since. Just don't tell my 600 music students (they wouldn't believe you anyway).

:headbang:

9. how did the rest of your friends, classmates, etc. react to them?
Presumably, you were in junior high when they first came out. Did you hear about them at the time, or not until later? And how well-known (not the same as "popular") were they among the kids you knew?

13. ..the crowd I hung around with.

..was much to sheltered to be exposed to such things. In the mid to late 70s, I was discovering music of the 1960s -- love, peace, and the artsy sounds.

I DID get into Elvis Costello, though, when he was pretty new. At least I was hep enough to handle his Armed Forces album.

16. It is funny how nostalgia hits you
When I was a teenager, I did not like metal much. I was too cool, too hardcore.

Now, I just love to hear old metal tunes. I have been listening to Judas Priest (Judas Priest! of all things) all day today. It is funny how they were the heaviest of heavy metal back then, and now sound almost mid-tempo compared to a lot of things.

19. Me too!
I grew up in small town Iowa, so I read about their shows before I could get hold of an album. They shocked me before I even heard them!

For you kids, in the old days we had to pick the cd up and turn it over to listen to the other side. We called them albums back then.

God, I'm old...

25. I got to meet Steve in the 80's
He opened for Ian Hunter, and he rocked. I had him sign my ticket stub and he just printed STEVE JONES. It's pretty cool.
I got to see the pistols in the early 90's also. They were fantastic. One of the best shows I have ever seen.

26. I liked them...but was a little shocked
I had already bought albums by the Ramones, Television, Patti Smith, Blondie...considered around '76-77 what "punk rock" was...I had gone in that direction after being bored with so much rock at the time...David Bowie, early Roxy Music, Lou Reed were like the gateway to discovering this stuff...At the time, all the lps by proto-punks like Velvet Underground, MC5, The Stooges were out of print and hard to find (in my area)...

but the British took it and ran away with it! I still have an old Time Magazine article about this new "punk rock" thing in England, and remember a news show (60 minutes? 20/20? I forget) that showed The Damned and The Clash among others...
"Never Mind the Bollocks" is a great album, but the song that made my eyes bug out upon first hearing back in the day was "Bodies"....

She was a girl from Birmingham
she just had an abortion
she was a case of insanity
her name was Pauline she lived in a tree
She was a no-one who killed her baby
she sent her letters from the country
she was an animal
she was a bloody disgrace
Body I'm not an animal
Mummy I'm not an abortion
Dragged on a table in a factory
illegitimate place to be
in a packet in a lavatory
die little baby screaming
Body screaming fucking bloody mess
it's not an animal it's an abortion
Body I'm not an animal
Body I'm not an abortion
Throbbing squirm, gurgling bloody mess
I'm not a discharge I'm not a loss in
protein I'm not a throbbing squirm Ah!
Fuck this and fuck that
fuck it all and fuck the fucking brat
She don't wanna baby that looks like that
I don't wanna baby that looks like that.
Body I'm not an animal
Body i'm not an abortion
Mummy! Ugh!
