Few women get mammograms...........
ATLANTA - After more than a decade of urging by doctors that women over 40 should receive mammograms yearly, few actually do so, according to a large cancer study.

Only 6 percent of women who received a mammogram in 1992 received mammograms yearly for the next 10 years, according to a study of 72,417 women of all ages at Massachusetts General Hospital, the largest look at mammography to date............

And I don't blame them. This seems so archaic to me. I'd never willingly stick my 'appendage' in between to plates and have them squeeze me............:wow:

Why not ultrasound?????????????

1. I just had mine done
while it's not fun, it's not that bad either considering what chemo and all that other crap would be.

2. Yes, it's not that bad
I just had mine done. I've definitely had much more invasive and worse procedures and lived to tell about it.

A few seconds of discomfort, not even a minute, pales in comparison to months of possible surgery, chemo, and radiation.

Ladies, get your mmammograms! :loveya:

3. I hate them but get them
But I've always said, if that was the only way men could be tested for testicluar cancer - you can bet they'd have a new test out in no time!

4. I've been saying the same thing for years.
Smash their jewels once a year and watch them find a new way to test.

5. Get your mammograms!!!!
I have gone thru breast cancer surgery (lumpectomy) and 33 radiation treatments because a mammogram found extremely early ductal carcinoma in situ. An ultrasound cannot find something as small as what I had and even some radiologists do not observe it. I just happened to have an excellent, well trained radiologist that read my mammo. I almost blew my mammo off last year; I could have been lanning my funeral this year. GET YOUR MAMMOGRAMS!!!!

6. I must remind people that cost is an obstacle for low-income women
Fourteen years ago, I had my first mammogram when the local hospital had a "sale" on them, only $49.

Given inflation, the "sale price" would probably be more like $75-100, and that's an insurmountable obstacle for women without health insurance who are too "rich" for Medicaid.

I wonder what the mammogram rate is in the countries that have national health care.

8. That may be
but cancer treatment is a hell of a lot more. The further advanced the cancer is the more expensive and the more stressful, painful, etc. etc.

9. No denying that cancer is more expensive, but
$385 can be more than a week's wages for a member of the working poor, and if the rent is due and the credit cards are maxed out, cancer detection is the last thing on their minds.

10. In all fairness
there are hospitals (like mine) that do indigent/charity care, i.e. they just write it off.

I wish they would advertise it more so that people who need it would know about it.
