Poll question: Best old-time Actress
Not just beauty - which actress really commanded your attention? Like the other poll, it's limited to women from the 30's and 40's.

In this one, I'm voting for Garbo. She was astoundingly beautiful and alluring. I love every woman listed below, but Garbo just did it for me. Bergman would be a very close second.

Growing up as a gay boy in the 60's, I adored old movies. I fell in love with every actress in this poll. It's so hard to choose....

3. I think of Bacall
as a second-generation actress. Late 40's, early 50's. But I adore her.

2. Bergman was cute, but Hepburn was a force to be reckoned with
Loved her in Lion in Winter.

4. Agreed
Her cousin was beautiful, but in a fragile, untouchable way. Kate just oozed sexuality. And what a talent!

7. As far as I know
Kate and Audrey were unrelated.

Kate was born in Connecticut... Audrey was from Belgium.

10. Each of these artists (sans Shirley Temple) are wonderful in their own
right. How sad to consider the caliber of their replacements on-screen today.

12. I beg to differ.
Shirley may be a Pug, but she was immensely talented, and grew up to be a looker.

16. agreed...
Shirley was the top box-office draw for a decade. She was immensely talented, and ended up having a productive and useful life. She's on old-time Republican, and I can respect that. She also lives near me.

26. Really? I'm surprised
My only memories of her acting were those horrendous things she did as an infant child with an irritating voice. I really can't give you a single serious role Shirley Temple ever played.

I must admit, however, my knowledge of Hollywood and movies is VERY limited.

She wasn't all refined and proper like a *lady* was supposed to be...she was hell on wheels. I respect that. :D

15. Katherine Hepburn...
Edited on Mon Jun-21-04 10:00 PM by Spider Jerusalem
my favourite Hepburn films are the comedies she did with Cary Grant, but her other work is excellent, too. I think she had far more range and sheer talent than anyone else on the list, except perhaps for Garbo, who comes in second for me...

17. Mae West.
As much as I dislike the glamor thing (and everything was about glamor back then), there's something to be said about 'girls that you wouldn't take back home to meet your moher'.

If it wasn't for Cary Grant and Laurence Olivier I wouldn't watch
those movies.

I like Olivia de Havilland.

Edited on Mon Jun-21-04 10:20 PM by notmyprez
I vaguely remember that I loved her when I was little. I suppose that was a good woman to admire.

(As an adult) I enjoyed her in "The Petrified Forest."

27. Hepburn-- why are there others on this list?
They may have been cute, or sexy, or whatever the gender ideals were at the time, but Hepburn was a genuine personality. She could play something other than the love/sex interest. Beauty is boring with a bit of character.

32. Myrna Loy was exquisite, witty, sly and sexy...
From the Thin Man series (with William Powell), to Best Years of Our Lives, she gave many terrific performances.

Every name on the list is a winner, but Myrna just has my heart!

33. I voted Bergman
even though I love Davis and Hepburn. I love Bergman's aloof, quiet dignity. Then again, I love her madness and her sometimes manic eyes.
