Poll question: Battle of the Beatlesque Melancholists - Aimee Mann vs Elliot Smith
Edited on Tue Jun-22-04 02:33 PM by Screaming Lord Byron
And no giving Elliot bonus points for being dead.
It's close, but I vote Aimee, even though 'Lost in Space' sucked and has no place on my CD rack beside the magic trifecta of Whatever-I'm With Stupid-Bachelor #2.

1. Aimee Mann blows everyone away
by far

I wasn't that big of a fan of I'm With Stupid, but Whatever and Bachelor #2 were simply amazing.

She sure knows how to be sad.

11. Well, I thought so
but I wasn't sure there were many who would agree with me.

Not only that, but she's in my range.... and for me, the best music is the stuff with which I can sing along.

3. I voted Elliot for consistency

I don't think Aimee has consistently been a "Beatlesque Melancholist" - that was all Smith did.

4. Fair enough. Aimee veers into Costellonia and Daviesisms.

5. huge fan of both of them
Edited on Tue Jun-22-04 02:38 PM by tigerbeat
gotta give it to aimee though. bonus points go to her for being a fan of one of my favorite un-appreciated lyricists: scott miller of game theory/loud family.

i felt "lost in space" wasn't so much bad as it was relentlessly mid-tempo and not terribly engaging.

7. Gotta give a thumbs up for the GameTheory/LF
reference. Lolita Nation remains on my top 50.

9. Lolita Nation
some review somewhere.....i totally forget where....referred to Lolita Nation as "the white album of the 80's". best. description. ever.

it's tied with "plants, birds, rocks and things" by loud family as my favorite miller album.

did he ever give me a peck on the cheek.

So I voted for Aimee.
