I saw them a couple of years ago, it was wonderful.. they don't get to NC very often.
I used to live in NY, saw Sun Ra many times, always great. :-)

3. In NC you can always go see
the Doctor Eugene Chadbourne, who is something of a spiritual disciple of Sun Ra I would say. Seeing as how he lives somewhere in North Carolina, the last I heard.

5. I should forewarn you then
or you could always look him up on the internet.

http://www.eugenechadbourne.com/

He started out at about the same time as John Zorn in NYC. They recorded together.

He was in a trio called Shockabilly which became Bongwater when he left. The other members were Kramer and Anne Magnussen.

He does banjo duets with Tony Trischka of Thelonious Monk compositions.

He played on some Camper van Beethoven albums, such as their cover of Pink Floyd's Careful with that Ax, Eugene.

One of his favorite instruments is the electric rake.

1975 Release of first album, VOLUME ONE; SOLO ACOUSTIC GUITAR, founding the much-acclaimed Parachute label, later to document works by John Zorn, Bob Ostertag, Henry Kaiser, Polly Bradfield, and others. Premiered his first series of compositions for solo acoustic guitar. Pioneering work in the “prepared” guitar.

1976 Release of VOLUME TWO; SOLO ACOUSTIC GUITAR. Continuing series of solo concerts across Canada and in San Francisco. Collaborations with Canadian Creative Music Collective members such as Micheal Snow, Casey Sokol and the late Larry Dubin. Forms Western Music Improvisation Company with Paul Woodrow and Clive Robertson. Activities include Cable TV broadcasts and cross-Canada tour. In San Francisco, first collaborations with soprano saxophonist Bruce Ackley, later a founding member of the ROVA Saxophone Quartet.

to say the least. I would be interested in checking him out. I wouldn't be surprised if he came here to Asheville occasionally.

I'm sure you must have heard of NRBQ. They are another Sun Ra influenced group, though they could be considered Rock and Roll by some. I've seen them many times over the years. I love those guys.

9. I thought Rocket #9 was bound for the planet Venus, Venus
as it was immortalized in Sun Ra's homage to Dizzy Gillespie's salt peanuts, peanuts?

I could be wrong. Maybe Venus was just the stopover?

:)

10. Great photos!
I only wish that Sun-Ra's music didn't make me want to take my own life. :(
