A journalist from a crusading news weekly famous for its expos¿s of drug trafficking and corruption in the northern border city of Tijuana has been shot dead.

Police said Francisco J Ortiz Franco had just got into his car with his two children when a black jeep with darkened windows pulled up and a masked gunman got out and shot him four times in the head and chest before speeding off.

The attack took place mid-morning on Tuesday in a busy street outside the Tijuana clinic were Mr Ortiz had been receiving therapy for facial paralysis, three blocks from the local murder investigation office.

Newspapers reported that the children, who were not hurt, said the gunman had struck just after their father sensed they were being followed and ordered them to buckle their seat belts.
