New Bible translation
Ann Coulter's message board is throwing a hissy fit over this new "modern" translation of the bible:

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=39114

I was just wondering what anyone here's opinion was...

"A brand-new translation of the Bible – praised by Britain's archbishop of Canterbury, that nation’s senior Christian voice – flatly contradicts traditional core Christian beliefs on sex and morality.

Titled "Good as New," the new Bible is translated by former Baptist minister John Henson for the "One" organization, to produce what the group calls a "new, fresh and adventurous" translation of the Christian scriptures."

2. from the examples it's not a translation, it's a rewrite...
if someone wants to write a book of teachings that's fine, but calling it the Bible is dishonest

5. Well, it's at least as honest...
as somebody who doesn't speak ancient hebrew and has never read the original commenting on the authenticity of a translation.

21. I agree
The New Jerusalem Version is considered by most biblical scholars to be the most accurate translation into modern English.

But if it's a translation, it should not be open to interpretation - keep the document as it is, warts and all. (as you can tell, I'm not one of those literal word of God types...)

8. I bet the Coulterites are all aflame
But then, they're all screaming idiots who have no idea how translation works or how the Bible was put together or even the history of it.

Screw off pickle-headed jerks.

I'm all for translating the Bible into acceptable, common vernacular that people can understand. Every generation should retranslate the Bible for their use.

This one goes a tad overbaord - I see no reason to change names, or obscure critical points, but I can understand and appreciate the reason the translator came up with what he did.

I don't know how he is advertising the thing, but I also hope he isn't calling it a literal translation of the Bible, because it isn't, and to make people think that this translation is a literal (or close to literal) translation is not helpful to his cause or to Christ's cause.

But there are some good ones out there for various poeple's needs: The Good News Bible, while thin in scholarship, is a great translation for kids or the lesser educated, since the vocabulary is limited and the language is changed at times for reasons of clarity. "The Message" is a great one also, and uses full adult vocabulary, but also changes things around a bit in order for the writing to make more sense grammatically, and at times adds extra words to clarify a point.

But of course, I'm sure the Coulterites feel that the KJV is the version that Jesus himself wrote, and so anything else they'll go all apeshit over because they're f-ing clueless morans who wouldn't know a Christian act if their life depended on it. Oops, wait! It does!!

10. Bullwinkle does the Bible?
I've seen some off beat paraphrases, but this goes to the top of the list for ridiculous.

Brother Henson, I'd keep looking for a calling if I were you. Something that is a match to your abilities.

This, obviously, is not it.

22. I don't think the LDS Church views The Book of Mormon as a 'translation'
They see it as another testament of God. Semantics, true, but it makes a difference.

15. This reminds me
A good atheist friend of mine was pressed into telling a Bible story to a bunch of kids. His version, which happens to be the truth, went something to the effect of, "And then God told the Isrealites to kill every living thing. Even the puppies and kittens. Even the little children like YOU." He never got pressed into doing that again.
