Does anyone here think I'm a troll?
(Setting myself up for some serious punishment).

As far as politics go - I consider myself pretty liberal.

When I lived in Charlotte, NC. My co-workers thought I was flaming liberal scum.

Then I moved to Boston, MA. My co-workers thought I was a right wing, redneck.

Then to Columbus, OH. Where I was even labeled a communist.

Look -

I think health care should be a right in a civilized society - but I'm afraid that anything the Govt implements will be rationed health care.

I think that we all need a helping hand sometimes, but I've also know welfare families that do nothing but milk the system. Some people think I owe them my tax dollars and they shouldn't have to try at all because they are victims of something or other.

I am all for Gay marriage - or getting rid of marriage altogether and granting civil unions to all.

I think that the 2nd amendment is not about hunting, or state sponsored "militias". It's intent was to provide the means for the citizenry to rise up against tyranny. I support an individual, law-abiding citizen's right to keep and bear arms.

I think that some critical infrastructure in our country (electric for example), probably should be nationalized, or at least back to the regulated monopoly status they used to have.

But I am a capitalist. I am the president of a closely held corporation. I think that in some cases, regulating business only decreases competition because only the biggest, most wealthy companies can afford to comply with the regulations.

And of course, I support the right of adults to have access to pornography, and my right to sell it. Everything but Children and animals is fair game.

So, with these opinions, I find I am on the "wrong" side of the fence here sometimes. But believe me, I have no love of the RW or the Repubs. Remember, the first thing Clinton did was downsize government, and he BALANCED the budget - that used to be a "conservative" ideology. I also believe our country has been hijacked by the military-industrial-intelligence complex, and a few very rich men are raping our country.

Just reading some other posts here made me wonder if y'all think I'm a troll. so what gives? (donning flame retardant thong now)

9. Blazing Saddles
Back at the sheriff's office, Hedley Lamarr has had a writ issued to release Mongo - he is free to go, but since he has developed an affectionate likeness for his captors, he prefers to stay with Sheriff Bart: "Sheriff first man ever whip Mongo. Mongo impressed. Have these feelings for Sheriff Bart." From Mongo, they learn why a "high-roller like Hedley Lamarr" is interested in the town of Rock Ridge: "Got to do with where choo-choo go." Philosophically wondering about what it all means, Mongo muses: "Mongo only pawn in game of life."

We bought a desktop for the office last month, so I now have the laptop at the register so I can SURF ALL DAY LONG! YIPEEE! (Except when the pesky customers expect me to ring them up)

Actually, I have lurked around DU for a couple of years now.

15. Not a troll
Hooray for lurkers!

I'm a mostly lurker too, I signed up in 2001, and even had a star back then :-) (soon as I get a job, my donor star will shine again)

It's all relative, like you mention.
I worked with some very conservative folks recently, in the most
conservative town in the SF Bay Area. My politics tend toward the 'progressive' left of democratic party.

The most fascinating discussions would come up when I was sure to avoid attacking my coworkers beliefs directly or assuming that they are morally corrupt in their positions.

I see alot of adhominem attacks here based on post counts, or lack of profile etc. Ugly examples of groupthink, in my opinion.

6. Welcome to DU, mongo
I don't think you're a troll. I think you've formed a set of opinions after some serious thought. I think you formed your opinions on your own, and were not "given" talking point opinions by someone else. That means, you CAN'T be a freeper.

As far as your opinions go, you sound like a perfectly resonable cat. I agree with far more of what you say than disagree. So, you're ok in my book. However, don't seek approval from everyone, or you WILL need that flame retardant thong. ;) We have a WIIIIDE mix here after all.

PEACE.

16. milking the system
How about strippers making $500/wk who live in public housing and are on food stamps because their income can't be traced.

How about welfare moms who have 4 kids by 4 fathers so that they can keep their checks rolling in.

How about selling your food stamps for drugs. I was on food stamps in the early 80's. Today I wouldn't be able to afford the government cheese I used to get.

People DO abuse the system. There is a segment of our society that thinks that society owes them something or everything.

My family is probably eligible for food stamps today, but we don't want the hassle and don't need them yet. My wife and I work 60 hrs/wk apiece for 22K/yr. Owning your own small business is voluntary servitude.

21. you are wrong on all counts
WELFARE has always been below the poverty line. no one has children to keep the check that keeps them below poverty, its a ridiculously stupid argument.

people abuse the system. especially rich people. especially corporations.

fyi: i was raised very very wealthy and can certify that no one milks the system more than the wealthy

29. Hell yes, the rich abuse the system
and yes, more than anyone.

But I've personally known some real white trash in my time. Whole families where the kids grow up and go on welfare.

People that only work when they can't get unemployment. When they are eligible - they try to get fired. I've seen it. I used to party with them. Of course, I was a bum myself, but I always sponged off my own family.

I knew a girl many years ago who told me she was trying to find a one night stand to get pregnant - to have a 3rd kid. I guess part of it is that when they turn 5 they're just not cute enough to cuddle anymore, but I she said she wanted a bigger check and bigger apartment.

Money is a carrot on a stick. I used to live quite well on $20.00/wk and food stamps squatting in a house no one was paying for. I've also barely made ends meet on 50k/yr.

17. question for you about guns and 2nd amendment

I think that the 2nd amendment is not about hunting, or state sponsored "militias". It's intent was to provide the means for the citizenry to rise up against tyranny. I support an individual, law-abiding citizen's right to keep and bear arms.

Okay, lets say we have a tyrannical leader (a 2nd term bush). Think about the kind of arms you'd need to rise up against him. Do you honestly want people be allowed to have weapons that can defeat the US Military? I'm nervous enough having a handful of nuts with their fingers on the button.

24. No, I don't want nut-cases with suitcase nukes running around.
But I do stand by my original statement about the INTENT of the 2nd amendment.

Perhaps it doesn't hold true today - I don't think I want someone next door to have an RPG, but I do think that people have a right to be able to protect themselves, and the handgun is the great equalizer.

If anything, the right to FEEL like you can protect yourself and your family is important. Even if you can't.

In reality, I could create better weapons out of sewer pipe and gasoline to fight an armed force than an AK-47. But a well armed citizenry will help keep the state in line. And I think if it ever came down to it, you would be surprised at what we Americans can and will do if necessary.

There isn't a force in the world that can occupy Appalachia.

32. I really don't know
I had to think about that for a while. I probably do want some validation for my views - but I also wanted to test the waters a
little bit and see where I fall on the spectrum here.

I also don't want to be seen as a troll - that is the automatic post when someone has a differing view. I'd like to think that occasionally I do have something to contribute here.

Compared to the region I live in, I'm very left of center. On this board - not so much left. That's OK.

22. Welcome to DU
Regarding your comment about your fears of nationalized health care being rationed: Don't you realize that it is rationed now? It's rationed to the point where millions don't have it at all. I can't see the doctor I'd like, or get all the tests I need, and I have excellent coverage compared to most. I'd say that also qualifies as rationing.

I don't agree with you on a lot of what you said, but I wouldn't necessarily call you a RW or Repug. It looks to me like you're somewhere in the center, and there are a lot of people here on DU who share your views.

27. I don't even have health insur now and get better care
Than when I had an HMO in Boston. Couldn't give me such "powerful" medications such as antibiotics for recurrent sinus infections that went on for months.

It sounds like you're in an HMO too. I think the biggest problem in health care is fair pricing. I am supposed to get a blood test monthly that cost my insur company $3.96. Now I get a bill for $39.00 for the same test. I only get tested about every 6 months now.

I would like to see nationalized health care - but do we give everyone lousy care to make it "affordable"?

30. Why
would everyone have lousy care? The care in France, Germany, Japan is top notch. Same thing with Canada and England. There's no reason the US can't do it as well. In fact, I think it would make our health care improve for everyone, and would help health care costs go down. If everyone has access to health care without bankrupting themselves, then more people would seek preventative care instead of waiting until they get so sick that they end up costing the system far more than they would have.
