Got some extra time? Into sailing or need to impress people with rope?

Get some string and have fun.

4. I used to know most of them
I was a Boy Scout and learned quite a bit from that experience. Archery , swimming , crafts, knots, lifesaving. forestry, on and on.

It was a great time and I have fond memories of summer camps and all.

5. I was a scout, too.
I could never master the bowline, though.

6. VIK -- Very important knot

When I was in the Coast Guard Auxiliary, they made us learn to tie a bowline with one hand and our eyes closed. It can save your life if someone throws you a line when you are drowning. It is the knot that will NEVER come undone if you don't want it to, and will ALWAYS come undone when you need it to. It can also be tied as a slipknot to come loose instantly. The Burl Ives song had it right. And once you master the bowline (which isn't that difficult despite morans trying to teach it as a rabbit going around a tree) it will prove to be your knot of choice in many situations where you want to be sure something is secured and will stay that way, but don't want to have to struggle to untie it later on.

You're right. The bowline rocks as a knot.
