3. Good stuff.
I liked Gilmour's guitar solo on Comfortably Numb.

I have been listening to some bootlegged Rush courtesy of someone on this site. It is really good.

6. Gilmour is a frickin' GOD
Edited on Fri Jun-25-04 01:10 AM by Rabrrrrrr
and very much not given the acclaim and accolades he deserves. And he really shines live - the Floyd albums, and his solo albums, are all great, with great Gilmour playing, but pull out any live album - and especially pick up the bootlegs - and you'll hear that man play the HELL out of his guitar. If you can find bootlegs from the mid to late 70s, you'll hear soloing that'll make you burn every goddamn John Cougar Mellonhead album you own.

NO ONE rocks like Floyd. They're in a world all to themselves, far above anyone else. Even the other incredibly good bands like Rush and Sabbath and Fripp, etc. Floyd easily and simply stand at the top of the pile, outjamming anyone and everyone, without histrionics, without running around the stage, without dance video bullshit, without anything but the music and lights and the incredible volume and the talent and Oh God! the music!

9. Solo on "Time" from DSOMoon
can make me cry its so good. You should check him out on "Muddy Water Blues",a cd by Paul Rodgers(Bad Co.). He plays on the track,"Standing Around Crying"...he really makes that Strat cry on that song!!
My ultimate guitar gods are Hendrix and SRV....they are who I model myself after on guitar...with a little Clapton and Page thrown in.

11. And no one - and I mean no one - can go from vibrato to whammy
as smoothly and deliciously as Gilmour. Makes my toes curl, and as you can see below, usually only Robb can do that.

14. I was lucky enough to see him on the About Face tour
in Ottawa Canada. He is an amazing musician a true master of his Art.
I especially love his self titled solo Album.

David Gilmour is (arguably) one of the most talented rock guitarists ever, and certainly adds much definition to the Pink Floyd sound. Whether or not the rest of the world agrees with me, I certainly rank him as my favourite, even above the likes of Eric Clapton. While he admittedly isn't a "speed demon" like Santana or Jimi Hendrix, the sheer expressiveness of his playing more than makes up for that. Mr. Gilmour's expressive playing is the staple of such songs as "Echoes," "Comfortably Numb," and "Marooned" (the latter of which is so evocative to me that it sounds as if he could be "crying" through his instrument, spilling out all the pain for which he cannot find the words). His solo work reveals another one of his greatest contributions to Pink Floyd: for sheer, explosive musical energy, there is no one like David Gilmour.

Mr. Gilmour is also quite impressive vocally. As one of Pink Floyd's lead singers (beginning with his hauntingly beautiful, wordless singing in "A Saucerful of Secrets"), he is capable of a wide variety of singing styles. It is almost hard to believe that the singer of the gentle, flowing "Fat Old Sun" and the singer of the savage, almost screamed "Dogs of War" are the same person--but they are both David Gilmour. Though sometimes vocally similar to Richard Wright (these two can often be heard singing beautifully in harmony--think "Echoes"), Mr. Gilmour's voice has a bit more gravel to it than Mr. Wright's clearer tone. Another characteristic of his singing is his ability to move effortlessly without stopping from note to note in a rapid series of clear-sounded notes. One of the best examples of this is the chorus to "So Far Away," a piece that I find extremely difficult to sing to my satisfaction thanks to the rapid note changes. "Coming Back to Life" runs a close second, though I find I can usually master it on the second or third try.

Many people fault Mr. Gilmour for his actions after the departure of bassist Roger Waters from Pink Floyd, but I pass no judgment on him. I am quite happy with both his solo albums and the music that he has put out with Pink Floyd since the breakup--in fact, since PULSE was my very first Pink Floyd album, I have a deep sentimental connection to it. If that biases me, then so be it--I will always respect and enjoy the talents of David Gilmour.

17. Well said.
And I couldn't agree with you more.

I remember when Rolling Stone had "The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" featured. Gilmour was ranked about 80, while Lou Reed was ranked around 40. I think Clapton made it in the top ten.

I like Lou Reed, but give me a fucking break. And Clapton, I believe, is about the most overrated guitarist on Earth.

18. I've seen 'em LIVE...3 times
1) 1973... Olympia Stadium in Detroit..."The Dark Side of the Moon" tour (31 years and at least a hundred shows since and I have YET to see a show to top this one. While their 2 other shows were outstanding, to say the least...they didn't top this one)

2) 1977... Soldier Field in Chicago..."Animals" tour...complete with the gigantic flying pig. Attendance was near 90,000 people. All stadium seats sold out and you could barely move down on the playing field.

3) 1994... Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis..."The Division Bell" tour. Sadly, this may well have been the final tour for Floyd. They have not toured since. All we can do is hope! I can still here Gilmour saying, after the 4th encore... "Good Night...hope to see you all again soon."

15. It was my privilege
to see them play "Echoes" live at Ann Arbors Hill Auditorium in the early '70s. Great, intimate venue and performance. Been a huge fan since the "Saucerful of Secrets" days. Damn few guitarists with Gilmours melodic sense.

16. Really Like His Tone
Not a big fan of Pink Floyd overall, but liked David's playing and his tone is to die for. So rounded and sweet, but still with a little edge on the front end. One of the best Strat tones ever. (There are others who've pulled great tone out of the Strat, but he's in the class picture.)
