Pretend to be very interested, take up some time, and then back out. These companies will learn.

Or better yet, talk to them about progressive politics, or their kids, or how you want wish them luck in finding a reasonable position.

My guilt kicked in, I know some telemarketers, and that's a shitty job.

4. Treat telemarketers kindly...........it's only right.
I used to be a telemarketer. It's a difficult, emotionally-wearing job that doesn't pay much. I try, now, to be polite, and to actually buy their product, if I can afford it. Unfortunately, I can't afford much right now, not even a home phone.

Still, the true measure of how kind a person is is if they are kind when they don't HAVE to be, and it benefits them nothing.

2. beats me
I hang up immediately after saying "no thanks" so I don't know if they understand me or not.

5. Im on my state do not call list.
I never get telemarketing calls. When the list first came out I had a few but the mere mention of the state list and a fine for calling me was enough. They stopped about a month after I got on the list. The worst ever was an MCI phone guy, what an idiot!

10. I have been on the Ok state list long before I signed on
to the federal list.

Maybe you were called by the same MCI guy I was. I still get pissed off when I think about him.

He called and I politely told him I was on both do not call lists and to please not contact me again. I also explained after the third time he called I was disabled and it was difficult at times for me to answer calls. He told me he'd damned well call me anytime he wanted to.

After 3 weeks of receiving phone calls every 2-3 hours between the hours of 8:00 am and 9:30 pm, I finally signed up for the call screening deal through SBC and the calls finally stopped. This jerk would call and breathe, then hang up. I have caller ID so when I'd get a call that was out-of-area, I started to answer saying "This call is being traced" or "Operator, please trace this call". I knew it was the guy because he had a very distinct baritone voice and after I'd make my little announcement he'd gasp or hmmph or make some other noise.

It ticks me off no end that I have to pay to not be harrassed by telemarketers. I've never bought anything from any telemarketer and I sure as hell won't ever entertain the idea now.

/end of rant!

6. Dude. Just hang up.
Keep a whistle or a boathorn by the phone. If they call back, blast 'em.

7. I tried to be polite to a telemarketer who was trying to get me to switch
phone companies.

I told her no, I wasn't interested. She insited that I just try her company. I told her that I had just tried her company two months before. That I had been promised a low rate for local phone service and ten cents per minute long distance service. But when I got my bill it was something like $30 more than I expected. I also noted that I was being charged 39 cents per minute on long distance.

She tried to argue again, at which point I was more than a little exasperated. I said, "I don't want it! I don't want it! I don't want it!" And hung up.

She called back immediately and said, "Don't you DARE EVER hang up on me again."

I was stunned and angry. I pay for that phone service and she was abusing me on MY phone. I called and reported her.

Half an hour later she called me back. "You bitch! You bitch! You F***ing bitch!" was screamed down the phone line.

I've had telemarketers get somewhat nasty in the past, but blew it off once I hung up on them. They never called back. If she hadn't called back, I wouldn't have reported her.

I had mixed feelings about having called, but after she called me again, I believe I made the right decision. I can't imagine anyone buying a phone service from someone who was so abusive.
