Anyone here skydive?
I had a dream I did it last night, it was cool. I wouldn't mind trying it for real. For those who've done it. Do you do it often? What's it like? Is the 45 seconds worth the money for the plane ride?

1. I used to skydive...
It is the most fun you can have with your clothes on. Seriously. I don't now because I have kids and a busy career.

2. Jumped several times
Edited on Sat Jun-26-04 03:44 PM by moof
never jumped enough times close enough together to get to free fall

from any height. Back then the rules were such that it took three jumps before you got to pull your own cord and a few more with you running the show till they would allow you to go on upstairs and do a long free fall. Personally it's all worth that first time you step off the plane and see all that nothing between you and the ground with the sensation of that rapid acceleration as you fall away. The problem is after the second time that sensation was nearly gone and the jumps to get to freefall were not worth the effort for moof.

It is something that everyone should do once and now that they will take you up strapped to someone else your first weekend out it would not cost as much in time or money if you just want to see what it's like once.

7. The jump school I was at wouldn't let anyone pack chutes,
without some special certification. On my 1st jump the guy before me had his chute tangle and had to use his reserve, on his 1st jump, same guy packed that chute too.

11. This was twenty years ago and
this may not have been the most reputable jump place
also memories get derailed sometimes but there is a clear memory of being reassured not worry because our reserve chutes were only packed by certified registered superduty careful unfoulable people so pack your chute carefully but don't worry if you make a mistake your reserve has been done by the professionals.

This was when the squares were just making their way onto the jump scene, sorry for those that might be confused almost everyone now jumps what was then called a square chute but back then the vast majority of chutes were the typical WWII type round canopys or what you might have seen on Ripcord or Gypsy Moths.

9. I did a tandem jump once, also because of a dream
It was nothing like the dream; it turns out I was thinking more along the lines of hang-gliding. Skydiving is among the more alarming things you can do. You'll basically be adrenaline-pumped for the month following the jump. If that's what you're looking for, hop to it (as it were). Otherwise, think twice. (It was fun, I'm glad I did it, but I haven't gone again.)
