Anyone else like carnivorous plants? *Pix*

A picture of some of my plants. See if you can identify all three. :)

This is in a small bog garden I have outside my window. We're lucky here in the Bay Area to have excellent conditions for growing most types of carnivorous plants. I just planted this garden a few months ago and already I'm getting a good carpet of moss growing. I also just discovered the small plant in the left hand corner of the picture. That is a carnivorous plant (I know the family, but haven't identified the species yet) that sprouted naturally from the peat moss I used for the bog. Pretty cool, eh?

2. CP's (Carnivorous Plants) are very sensitive to toxic chemicals
Edited on Sat Jun-26-04 06:08 PM by LeftCoast
so I think Republicans are off the menu. :)

On a serious note, CP's act as a sort of 'canary in the coal mine' for the environment since they don't do well with polluted water. CP's in the wild are really threatened right now.

4. You are correct!
At least as far as the VFT. You may be correct on the other, but I've not heard it called that. :) Here's a blow up of the other.

Notice the little bug / victim?

12. I didn't realize they were up there
I'll have to put that on my list of future places to visit. I'm constantly on the lookout when I hike here in the Bay Area. I've heard they grow here, but have yet to spot any in the wild.

7. I love CPs, but unfortunately I keep killing them so I decided for their
sakes I'd admire them in photos, etc. I tried to follow all of the instructions about building suitable terrariums, using distilled water, etc. and no luck. My kids think they are the coolest things to watch.

10. They can be very tempermental
I'm really glad they seem to do so well outside. I just have to keep them wet enough. I've got a pretty cool watering system set up though. It lets me monitor the water level in the 'bog'. :)

11. I don't know if it's easy to see
but the venus fly trap has eaten a number of mosquitos. It can digest one in about two days. Normally a fly or a spider takes a week or more. All the mosquitos seem to keep it fat and happy.

I'm especially pleased at the color. It's really reddened up since I put it outside. All these cp's really like intense sun.

13. Pitcher Plant, Venus flytrap and Sundew
Pitcher plant, venus flytrap and Sundew. All occur naturally in the Carolina Bays along the East Coast.
Here's a picture of the Sundew, slightly different than yours, but I think thats it.

14. Mine's still very young
Not sure what it will look like as it matures. I just think it's cool that it sprouted there all on its own.

15. Awesome!

As a Northerner, I was amazed at the plants I saw outdoors, in yards and gardens, when I lived in Berkeley.

18. they look great!
In south Louisiana our carnivorous pitcher plants are sprouted by fire so I can't grow them in my yard. The Nature Conservancy burned off an area and quite a number of yellow and red ones sprouted up but I won't say where because 1) fear of poachers and 2) lousy at giving directions. But they are something else!

24. Pretty colors!
The Venus fly trap is really beautiful.

A friend of mine just planted a few carnivorous guys -- he's on Stanyan right by the park. He was showing me and our friend Bob a picture of one of them and it was startling to say the least. It -- well, there's no other way to say this -- it looked like a woman's open labia! A REALLY big one! Yeegads, it was givin' me the willies. But not as much as poor Bob, who hasn't seen a Ginnie up close since he came out of dear ol' Mom. Poor guy. From the look on his face I'm betting he's looking at some Carnivorous Ginnie nightmares real soon. :)

Hell Hath No Fury :hi:
