Lousy burn quality off iTunes (I'm new to this stuff)
Edited on Sat Jun-26-04 07:41 PM by m-jean03

Why can't I burn discs that don't skip off of iTunes?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

1. it must be your burner
iTunes simply provides the data stream. Try burning from another source and see if you have the same problem. Might be you need to clean the laser?
If so, I suggest the checking out a previous recommendation concerning use and re-programming of Windows-based machines. An axe, three concrete bricks, lighter fluid and a sledgehammer are the minimum in necessary tools, however, needed to reprogram it properly.

2. Thanks

This is actually a Mac I'm using. This is probably a stupid question -- but, well, I don't have a CD burner, just a disc drive. So is it completely idiotic to try to burn music without a CD burner? I was just messing around and I thought I would give it a shot.

5. Hey, I had no clue

I'm from the "stick the tape in the player and record the CD" generation.

6. Is your drive a "combo" drive?
Many more recent Mac's have combo drives, which can burn CD's. If you've tried it, and gotten a CD that plays, but skips, then you DO have a burner.

That being the case, why are the discs skipping? You might be using poor quality blank CDs. Try buying higher quaility, name brand discs. If that doesn't work, see if you can slow down the burning speed. I'm not familiar how to do that with a Mac, but slowing the burn speed from 8x to 2x solved skipping problems on my PC.

I appreciate the advice -- now I know at least my attempt wasn't utterly futile. Yeah, these are cheapo "Office Depot" discs. I'll try the burn speed adjustment, too. Thank you, very much. :) :-)

4. I have a solution...
If something doesnt burn right... go dowload it off Shareaza (or some other filesharer) for free. Seems fair... if you want to do it the nice legal way (but I thought you were a bad girl?)

12. Thanks, I'll try these

I think it was a combination of poor quality discs and this cheapo player I was playing them in. I just tried my disc in a real stereo upstairs and it worked like a charm.

11. Hi m-jean!
I've been using i-tunes since it's creation and I've noticed that the quality and type of cd you purchase really makes a difference in how well your cd turns out. I use TDK music CDRs, but the TDK data cds are a quality product as well. I've tried buying other, less expensive brands, but the only other brand that has worked decently were the Verbatim "vinyl" style CDRs.

Another thing you might want to do, just for good measure is to run a CD/DVD lens cleaning CD, just to make sure their isn't any dust or gunk clogging up the laser. The city I live in is so dusty and polluted, I clean mine about once a week, just in case.

13. Thanks Susang -

All of these pointers will be looked into. I have a feeling the big problem was with the CD player now, combined with cheap discs. :-)
