My friend is going through spiritual/political crisis after seeing F9/11
Edited on Sat Jun-26-04 07:46 PM by _Wayne_
I took my friend to see F/911 last night.

Before last night, she supported the War on Iraq, and thought anyone who protested the war was ignorant.

Now she says "I'm mad at Mr. Bush," and is reconsidering all her political positions. She has been online today looking at Michael Moore articles. She is also talking with everyone she passes about the film, and about Bush, the war, and all the topics mentioned in Moore's film.

This after no prodding from myself, or anyone else for that matter, about changing any of her political convictions.

I loved the film, though it could have been much more persuasive using more data about the war. For instance, Moore never mentions just how many innocent Iraqi civilians died as a result of US bombings. He does show the pictures of injured civilians, though.

1. thats awesome
I agree that there could have been more in the movie to be more persuasive, but there are time constraints to consider, and SOOOOO much information. I think he did a pretty good job, and from the response from your friend, maybe Moore did it just right.

2. I think there will be more people like your friend
which is why the right wing is desperately trying to keep people from seeing it. I know that before Friday, there was some talk of freeper disruption at the filming. I have noticed that this hasn't happened. Maybe the freepers were intimidated by the long lines-or maybe their keepers, fearing mass disillusionment, called them off.

give honest answers to her questions.

Having a paradigm shift can be overwhelming.

Kudos to your friend. :toast:

4. Give your friend all the support you can
you DID tell her about DU, didn't you?

As for Moore's data, keep in mind he had a couple of months worth of "lead time" to consider--he may not have wanted his data to appear outdated.

5. She is in no crisis of any sort. America OTOH is.
I've been in spiritual crises all my life, due to issues of a couple, very personal and embarrassing sorts. I'm still here, I haven't gone mad, I haven't killed myself. If I'm fine having survived all that, she can be fine over this.

She'll be fine. The rest of us have tolerated that idiot* for well over 3 years and have known. We're still fine. She'll be fine. Others have been sent to war over his* lies and deception. She'll be fine. Others have died because of his* personal bloodlust and quest for glory and power. She'll be fine, I can assure you.

I'm glad she's waking up.

So what's the crisis? It sounds like it's ENDING. A crisis is more than ambivalence. A crisis is also blindly following someone, not realizing what sort of human filth they are and not seeing the actions they make or the result of said actions. And that is precisely the crisis America is in right now.

6. watch out
Changed beliefs are like rubber bands. The belief can stretch but it will try to go right back to where it was.

This might be different but be aware that that is the modus operandi for most belief change.

8. The guy sitting next to me watching the movie was having a seriously
painful case of cognitive dissonance, from the looks of it!

9. I say go again - so that everyone feels they have to see it
Go more than once and take anyone you can find to crank those box numbers up then people will get this "Passion of the Christ" like feel that have to see it. Nobody wants to be left out of the dinner conversation because they didn't see F 9/11.

Shit - I'll bet even Bush couldn't resist seeing what all the fuss is about!

10. Must be hard to realize the truth
My step-dad went through a similar transformation, not due to F9/11, however.

11. It's great she saw some truth
But it must be quite a shock. I guess it would be like the day you found out there was no Santa Claus. It is confusing, and you get pissed and feel like you have been used. Just stick by her and don't push too many things on her. Answer her questions and have conversation. Maybe she will be able to turn some other people on to the truth.
