"Hey fag...are you gonna go cook some dinner..."
Edited on Sat Jun-26-04 11:27 PM by rumguy
Weird. I was walking home from a little store about two blocks from my place today (in Seattle). I was approaching, carrying a small bag of stuff I'd just bought, a quiet residential intersection on the way home and a car passing through the intersection yelled this at me. There were two youngish looking guys in it, but I couldn't really get a good look cuz they were about fifty yards from me...

I have no idea what they meant. I have no idea what they were getting at...

I didn't even get in time to flip them the bird. They just drove through the intersection and never came back....

I'm not gay. I don't know why they would have yelled this. Fuckin' creeps a part of me wishes they would have circled back around.

1. Perhaps they were just hungry...
You know what they say; guys who accuse other men of cooking dinner are just hungry themselves.

5. Seems like a lot of young people, kids mainly, are just plain spiteful and
mean. They do things that are totally unexplainable, like beating to death a poor homeless man. Or killing two people at the tender young age of 14.

We've gone horribly wrong somewhere. Sometimes I think that a lot of the young kids in this generation are just lost, nothing to look forward to, nothing in their lives right now. Too young to be this jaded and bitter, too stupid to know better. It's something that needs to be addressed, but who's going to take the time and the trouble?

Maybe it's because they see the war, umemployment, poverty, homelessness, poorly educated, rampant corporate greed and corruption, and they thing that there isn't much point. They are being fed constant fear from their own government. After a while it becomes numbing. And that's sort of what there emotional states seem to be, numb.

It's they passed through the intersection so quickly and I was wasn't close to them...so it's strange....they hardly looked at me...

It's honestly one of the strangest things I've ever had yelled at me. And it sounded hostile and wierd....

18. It's sad, but you're right.
I feel really sorry for the kids growing up these days... they're just marketing targets and fashion victims and consumers. They don't get a chance to be kids and figure out who they are. And I'm sure my generation (and the generation after mine) is full of really lousy parents.

Maybe it's America, maybe it's the world. But things are sliding...

11. no I could see the guy who yelled it looking right at me
I was the only person around....

There's nothing in the way I look, or in the way I move through the world that would make someone think I'm gay...

It was like just hate spewed at the only available target. And then they just took off, never to be seen again....

10. I had someone yell fag at me
Edited on Sat Jun-26-04 11:49 PM by StaggerLee
as they drove by while I was walking home from a bar about 4 years ago. It just seemed to be a random drive by insult. Senseless and stupid.

Right after 9-11 I was pelted by french fries from a passing pickup truck, again as I was walking. I used to get a lot of evil stares around that time. I could be easily mistaken for an arab since both parents are Mexican with plenty of indiginous blood on both sides of my family.

*edit- thanks Rumguy! You pulled me out of the 700 Club! YAY!

35. People are ass holes
That's all there is to it.

I've been called "Fuckin A-Rab" before because I am brown. I was also picked on and bullied in 9th grade in one of my classes for a similar reason.

I've also had some stuff thrown at me in a fuckin store once a long time ago by some ass hole kids -- just like your case, they were completely unprovoked. I also recall having racial epithets being hurled my way when I would ride bikes when I was younger.

Granted, I'd have to say that I had it OK for the most part. Even HS classes were OK my juinior and senior years because they were mostly AP and honors classes -- and it was less likely for people to be racist ass holes in those classes.

Shit like this is why I've become anti gun control. There are a lot of mean ass holes out there, and especially after 9/11 I've been feeling a bit paranoid about being brown and a liberal.

37. Freedom of expression. If you're PERCEIVED to be gay, then they'll
come after you.

People have been slaughtered because they APPEARED to be gay or because the psycho murdering animal decided that person was a homosexual.

Welcome to my world. I and millions of us live with that sort of behavior and threat every day of the week.

By "freedom of expression", we're not free to express ourselves because somebody else will take an illegal freedom and commit a crime against us.

39. Good Point, Hypno
Happens even in good ol' librul NYC. After the recent Folsom Street East street fair (which is all about leather men and such) a man was beaten--thank God he's alright. Sometimes people are killed. I hope nothing happens today (Gay Pride Sunday in NYC). You know how people get when they see folks different from them having a good time!

Surely Seattle has a chapter of AVP (Anti-Violence Project) or a similar group. They want to know about verbal harassment as well as actual violence. So much goes unreported to the police. Give them a call.

44. sometimes humor is very subjective
in all likelyhood they had no intent other than to amuse themselves.

When I was a teen, a friend of mine had this thing - it had a variety of one or two word phrases written big enough to read from a short distance, and could be flashed at other drivers - phrases like lane hog, slow down, etc.

My favorite was "idiot" so I would flash it randomly just to see how people reacted. I was amused, I'm sure they never were.

You can't always take everything directed at you to be personally directed at you.

46. Why is everyone acting surprised about this attitude?
Ever since the eighties, twenty-somethings see our government pull this "might is right", "you mess with the bull you get the horn" CRAP. Reagan pulled it and got praised and fawned over by the media. Bush1 pulled it and got praised and fawned over by the media. Clinton never sent a soldier out who didn't home, and is still to this day respected by leaders around the world, as at least TRYING to use diplomacy first and foremost, yet according to everyone in the US media, he is the most vile evil person who ever walked the face of the earth. Shrub is the embodiment of this attitude you are talking about. A swaggering, loud mouthed, braggart, who shoots first and asks questions later, doesn't give one little SHIT about all the flag draped coffins returning from the ME, yet does not have the gut's to put his own ass or his families ass on the line, and (gee whiz how surprising), the press fawns all over him. So it is not surprising that you see younger kids acting like they do. We fucking tell them it's GOOD to be that way.
